Managing college stress
With the fall semester now in full swing, the reality of your school workload may be setting in. While college is an exciting time, it can be stressful for many students. Check out our top six study tips that can help college students manage stress.
Manage your stress
1 No distractions
Ensure your study environment is free of distractions, people, Instagram, Netflix, cell phone and other such temptations. Libraries provide a great place to study.
2 Master your schedule
Create a master schedule for the entire exam period indicating what subject you are going to focus on and when. Study the subjects you find most challenging or perhaps most boring at the start of your study session.
3 Examine your exam
Be sure to know what kind of exam you will be taking – essay, short answer, fill in the blank, true/false, multiple choice, etc. Remember – essay exams require full comprehension of course content – pure memorization will not serve you well in answering essay questions.
4 Make lists
Generate lists of words, definitions, vocabulary, formulas, theories and other such content you will need to review. Que cards are helpful for retention.
5 Make it your own
Tailor your studying techniques to your preferred method(s) of learning. When you study in a manner that compliments your preferred way to learn, you accomplish more in less time.
- Seeing: Use coloured highlighters for words and definitions and create concept maps.
- Hearing: Read your text book out loud. Consider recording words and definitions and play back several times.
- Doing: Walk and read at the same time. Consider using que cards for a memory game based on course content.
