Being tech-savvy is no longer a “nice-to-have” job qualification; it’s essential for employment and career advancement. With unprecedented growth in the tech sector, demand for women, women-identifying and non-binary individuals who possess a broad range of technology- and digital-focused knowledge, understanding and skills is at an all-time high.

To unlock potential and support a more inclusive workforce across the technology sector, Fanshawe Corporate Training Solutions has partnered with The Gender Equality Coalition of Ontario to launch an exciting technology skills training and development program.

The IgniteHER: WomXn in Tech program offers a unique pathway to acquiring the technology, digital and employment-ready skills needed to access jobs and career advancement opportunities with tech sector organizations. Funded by the federal and provincial governments, the program is being offered at no cost to participants.

A Career in Tech

Technology is an ever-changing sector with a wide range of entry and mid-level opportunities for individuals with varying skill sets and interests. Careers in technology include a wide range of dynamic roles and positions. Including, but not limited to:  

  • Customer service and help desk support
  • Office administration
  • Sales, marketing and digital marketing
  • Web design and web programming
  • Information technology (IT) and software developer

WomXn in Tech

The program has been designed with everything you need to overcome barriers and achieve success in technology-related roles. The learning modules cover topics such as common software applications, network management, fundamentals of coding and programming, web platforms and content management systems, digital marketing tools and much more!

The program’s blended delivery includes both online and in-person learning activities. Participants can expect:

  • Six weeks of technology and digital skills training
  • Two weeks of mental wellness and employability development support
  • Three months post-hire employment coaching and mentoring

Flexible delivery options allow you to complete both online and in-person components based on your schedule. The program can also help accelerate the next step of your career if you choose to pursue further training in a specific technology-related area.

After completing the program, you will be connected to employers who are looking to hire individuals with the skills you develop during your training. You will be supported throughout the interview and hiring process as well the during your first few months on the job by Employment Consultants from Community Employment Services Fanshawe.

Participant eligibility

This program is open to women, women-identifying and non-binary individuals. Participants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for this program:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age 
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada (not open to international students)
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations
  • For English first language speakers, students must provide proof of proficiency as determined by the college or institute (Grade 10 English or college admission testing may be used as an equivalency)
  • For English as a second language speakers, students must provide proof of English language skills (IELTS 6.0; CLB 6; CEFR B2) or equivalency as determined by the college or institute

Additionally, participants should:

  • Possess a willingness to learn new technologies and software
  • Have an interest in pursuing a career in digital and technology-related roles
  • Be able to communicate effectively and have strong interpersonal skills
  • Be friendly, flexible, and willing to work in team-based environments
  • Have the ability to provide, accept, and integrate constructive feedback
  • Have regular access to a PC or MAC computer with an internet connection, camera/microphone and recent versions of Google Chrome or Internet Explorer installed
  • Have basic computer knowledge and skills
  • Have access to transportation for in-person activities and job interviews
