Program Description

Being in a Health Care Office Assistant position is a specialized administration role, it's a role that requires attention to detail,
compassion and specific knowledge. This program will cover all aspects of the medical office and prepare you for this exciting,
ever changing field. You will learn how to work with both patients and medical professionals, You'll start off learning medical
terminology, billing, transcription, patient records, patient preparation and the art of processing physicians orders. Students
use current and industry standard software while receiving experiential computer learning. Graduates of this program are prepared 
to step into the medical office world with careers as a medical secretary, medical team assistant, administrative assistant, office 
assistant, medical records clerk, clerk or receptionist. This program is offered on a part-time basis, all courses are available online.
There are also accelerated in-class course offerings at regional campuses.

This course introduces the student to medical transcription and builds on previously acquired general transcription and keyboarding skills. The student will apply the basic medical knowledge learned in Medical Terminology 1 and concurrently in Medical Terminology 2 in the completion of various medical documents and records. As a transcriptionist, you are charged with the responsibility of assuring that the physician's words are recorded promptly and accurately. Accuracy, editing skills and reading/writing for understanding and meaning will be emphasized throughout the course. Advanced technology such as voice recognition systems, electronic patient records and electronic signatures directly affect the transcriptionist's role. The importance of professional ethics, privacy and confidentiality will be highlighted throughout the course.

This course will give you the knowledge and skills required to prepare a client for examination, including measuring vital signs, measuring height and weight, positioning and draping, use of proper body mechanics, tray preparation and specimen collection. You will learn how to complete a proper health assessment using a review of body systems. Knowledge will be gained in the ares of infection and infection control; medical and surgical asepis, professionalism and communication. All of the knowledge and skills acquired will prepare you for working in a health care setting.
