Elder Abuse

Personal Support Workers (PSW's) play an integral role in the delivery of healthcare services. One critical role is to identify, report, communicate, support and educate others on the prevention of this often insidious abuse. Elder abuse can take place in our communities in a variety of places: the home, residential setting or in the community. It is estimated that 4-10% of seniors are abused or have experienced abuse. as our population continues to age, it cannot be acceptable for this trend to increase along with it. While the nurse sets the careplan, the PSW often plays a key role in observation and supportive communications with their clients. This course is designed to empower PSW's with the key information required to effectively contribute to the healthcare team and to assist seniors and their families who may be at risk for abuse.
