Maternal/Newborn Nursing

This course is offered in partnership with the Southwestern Ontario Maternal Newborn Child and Youth Network, based at London Health Sciences Centre. This is a comprehensive theory-based course addressing the fundamentals of maternal / newborn nursing care including current evidence and best practice guidelines. Various aspects of antenatal, intrapartum, postpartum and newborn care are discussed such as: Reproductive anatomy/physiology Fetal Development Antenatal assessment High risk antenatal care Nursing care for both normal and high risk labour and birth Non-pharmacologic/pharmacologic pain relief for labour Fetal health surveillance Perinatal loss The effect of woman abuse on childbearing women Postpartum nursing care Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorders Breastfeeding Newborn Assessment Well Baby Care Common complications during the neonatal period This course is suitable for nursing students as well as RNs, RPNs in current practice who wish to update their perinatal nursing knowledge base.
