    Program Description

    This program was designed to train individuals to work within a complex building such as a hospital, school, shopping mall or any large industrial complex.it is recommended that the applicant be currently employed in a building environment. The primary focus of the program will be to gain the basic knowledge of the interrelated complexities of  the following systems: heating, ventilation, water and air supplies, lighting and electrical power supply. Also included in the program will be the required codes and by-laws that regulate large complex buildings.

    Level 1 Credits
    Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
    Group 1
    CIVL-1013 Air Conditioning 3
    Learn to operate and maintain a variety of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Topics include: refrigeration cycle, terminology, auxiliary components, controls, lubrication, and purging technique. BES 702 .
    CIVL-1012 Air Handling 3
    Covers air systems, fans, filters, coils, ductwork, and air supply points. Also preventive maintenance programs, check points, and forms to be used. BES 703
    CIVL-1014 Controls 3
    Learn the operation and application of automatic controls. Topics include control drawings, calibration, types of controllers, humidity control, pneumatic devices, and electrical-electronic devices. BES 705
    CIVL-1016 Electrical 3
    This course covers the design, operation and maintenance of electrical systems in buildings in a safe, energy efficient, economical and environmental responsible manner.
    CIVL-1010 Energy Efficiency in Large Buildings 3
    Learn to control utility costs and calculate payback of new cost cutting equipment. Also learn where to look for savings in heat loss, heat gain, air handling, lighting, maintenance, and computerized switching systems. BES710.
    ENVR-1006 Heating 3
    This is an introduction to the operation and maintenance of boilers, burners, heating pipe systems and plumbing details. BES701
    CIVL-1015 Introductory Overview 3
    This course which provides visual awareness of equipment in complex buildings with demonstrations of boilers, chillers, air handling units, fire protection, and electrical equipment. BES700.
    CIVL-1017 Water Treatment 3
    This course covers terminology, elementary water chemistry, hot water, chilled water, steam, humidifiers, swimming pools, and solar heating of water. (BES706)

    This course covers building mechanical systems specific to hospitals and their effective maintenance. BES709.

    Students Must Complete a Minimum of 7 credits in this
    program at Fanshawe College to meet the Program Residency
    requirement and graduate from this program
