Your Learning Experience

Customer Service Fundamentals - Insurance is a one-year Ontario College Certificate program. This program is designed to give students an overview of business and insurance theory and practice with a focus on customer service and distribution systems. 

 

When you graduate, you’ll be eligible to write your Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO) or OTL licensing exams. You may also be able to obtain the General Insurance Essentials Certificate from the Insurance Institute of Canada.

 

Graduates of this program may also continue their studies by transferring into the second year of Fanshawe College's two-year Business - Insurance Ontario College Diploma program.

 

Available in a traditional in-class format with September admission.

 

Career Information ​​​​​​

Graduates of Fanshawe’s Customer Service Fundamentals - Insurance program are prepared to enter the fast-paced property and casualty insurance industry in a customer service capacity. Graduates are suited to a variety of entry-level clerical and customer service positions with insurance companies, insurance agency offices, brokerages, direct insurance writer companies and call centres.

Customer Service Insurance

Analyze a client’s current and future requirements and make recommendations on products that would best suit their needs.

Customer Service Representative

Develop leads, schedule appointments, identify customer needs, and market appropriate products and services.

Customer Service Representative

Work with producers, insuring partners, and an assigned portfolio of clients handling renewals, endorsements, assessing risk exposures, and providing recommendations for a suitable insurance program.

Learning Outcomes

The successful completion of this program will enable the graduate to:

1. Discuss the economic and social importance of general insurance.

2. Define insurance terms and recognize the basic elements of property/casualty insurance policies and documents.

3. Assist in completing an application for personal lines insurance and calculate the appropriate premium using a rating manual.

4. Apply the marketing techniques used by insurance companies, brokers and agents.

5. Perform a variety of data management tasks using word processing, spreadsheet and other industry specific software, and organize data into an effective presentation format.

6. Apply basic accounting principles in measuring, identifying and recording transactions.

7. Outline all functional areas of the insurance industry.

8. Enhance the effective operation of the workplace through the application of administrative skills.

9. Apply general insurance practices in accordance with relevant professional, legal andethical standards.

Admission Requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, or mature applicant with the following courses:

Any Grade 12 English (C or U)

Any Grade 11 or 12 Math (C, U or M) - a minimum final grade of 60% is required for Grade 11 Math

Students who do not meet the admission requirements are recommended for academic upgrading. A conditional offer may be possible with proof of enrolment.

Note:
Graduates of Customer Service Fundamentals - Insurance may choose to transfer into the second Year of the Business - Insurance Ontario College Diploma program.

This course introduces the student to the Principles of Accounting, and includes an exploration of the underlying concepts that guide the preparation of accounts for individuals and organizations. It is designed to teach the student, regardless of program destination, an essential life skill - an understanding of Net Worth, and its importance to business success and the financial well being of the individual.

This course will introduce business students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.
MKTG-1012Principles of Marketing 13
This course is designed to provide an overview of the decisions that face Marketers in today's fast-paced and competitive business environment. Students will learn that marketing is not only advertising but a broad set of activities designed to satisfy consumer needs and wants. Students examine the information Marketers require for effective decision-making and learn the basic elements of the marketing planning process.

This course provides a review of basic arithmetic and algebra as well as providing students with mathematical tools and concepts needed for other college courses and in future employment. This course presents and helps to develop some of the skills required to achieve academic and career success. Areas of focus include college resources, study skills, time management, academic integrity, emotional self-awareness and social skills development. Additionally, emphasis is placed on career readiness and preparation.

This course explores the various functional areas of business in Canada and demonstrates the interrelationship among these areas.
