    A career in the Health Sciences is rewarding, respected and takes a unique set of specialized skills. But finding the right career in this sometimes complex sector can be a daunting challenge. With so many diverse and dynamic options available to you, it’s a good idea to choose wisely. That’s why Fanshawe created the Pre-Health Science program.

    Once you begin the program, you’ll be given the opportunity to study subject areas relevant to the many amazing health sciences career programs at Fanshawe College. As well, you’ll graduate with a better appreciation of the professional roles, responsibilities and academic requirements of health care disciplines. To help you get there, you’ll study Writing for the Sciences, anatomy, biology, chemistry and math. You’ll also learn of the role Health Sciences play in our society. You’ll be given a wide array of knowledge that will help you to focus and plan your future career path. When you graduate, you’ll be in perfect position to realize your career goals. You may even find you’ll want to continue your studies. In fact, students who achieve a B in every course are eligible for admission consideration to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) collaborative program with Fanshawe College and Western University; students who excel in the Pre-Health Science program are also positioned to apply for any Fanshawe College Health Science career program.

    • Admission to the Pre-Health Science program does not guarantee admission in a subsequent year to any College program. Successful completion of the Pre-Health Science program, however, does enable the student to be given additional consideration when applying for one of the following programs:

    • In order to be considered for admission to the Dental Hygiene, Medical Radiation Technology, Paramedic, Practical Nursing and Respiratory Therapy health career programs, students who register in the Pre-Health Science program in September 2016, must successfully complete their Pre-Health Science Ontario College Certificate with a minimum GPA (grade point average) by April 30, 2017 in order to be eligible for admission consideration in the immediately following academic year to any of the above career programs. The minimum GPA required varies depending on the intended career program. Consult the individual career program's 'Admission Requirements' section for details concerning these requirements. 
    • The Pre-Health Science program is the preferred designated preparatory program for admission to career programs in the School of Health Sciences and School of Nursing.
    • **The Fanshawe College Pre-Health Science program prepares applicants for the Nursing program who lack the secondary school requirements. In order to be eligible for admission consideration to the Nursing program in 2017, students must successfully complete ALL courses in the Fanshawe College Pre-Health Science program with a minimum grade of 'B' in each course by April 30, 2017. Only applicants with an Ontario College Certificate from the Fanshawe College Pre-Health Science program will be considered for admission to the Nursing program in lieu of the stated secondary school requirements.

    English Language Requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

    • A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 550 for the paper-based test (PBT), or 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
    • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with a score of 70 in writing, reading and speaking and a score of 80 in listening
    • An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 75% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years

    Recommended Academic Preparation

    • Grade 11 or Grade 12 Physics (C) or (U)
    • Grade 12 Business and Technological Communication (O)

    Recommended Personal Preparation

    • Students should develop personal responsibility, emotional maturity and those personal characteristics which will enable them to co-operate with others in the delivery of health care.

    Applicant Selection Criteria

    Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:
    1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
    2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)

    ANAT-1002 -  Human Anatomy I
    This course is the first of a two part course which introduces normal structure and function of the human body systems in order to prepare the student for advanced science courses including anatomy and physiology. The course begins with an introduction to anatomical terminology, body regions and planes, homeostasis and tissues. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of the gross anatomy of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems, and applying them to a diversity of body systems using the language of medicine. The course objectives are designed co-dependently with the core courses in the Pre-Health Science program.

    ANAT-1009 -  Human Anatomy 2
    ANAT-1009 is the second of a two-part course which introduces normal structure and function of the body systems in order to prepare the student for advanced anatomy and physiology courses offered in Health Sciences. The course covers the remaining 6 of the 11 body systems from ANAT-1002. The material includes: the cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, endocrine, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.

    BIOL-1003 -  Biological Sciences I
    BIOL 1003 is the first of two biology courses designed for students entering careers in health care. This course begins with an examination of biological molecules, and cell structure and function. Students will understand how cells replicate, how cancer develops as a result of unregulated cell division, and how cells produce energy. Students will also learn how genetic traits are inherited and evolution. The course will finish with an introduction to infectious organisms.

    BIOL-1008 -  Biological Sciences 2
    BIOL1008 continues the study of health sciences by examining nucleic acids, protein synthesis, molecular genetics, recombinant DNA, and genetic engineering technology. In this course, students will also learn about how the endocrine system plays an important role in homeostasis, the cellular physiology of the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, digestive system, and urinary system, as well as some related disorders of those systems. This course will also focus on the functioning of the immune system, autoimmunity, allergies and vaccination.

    CHEM-1004 -  Chemistry I
    This course emphasizes the molecular view of chemical principles and will present and use the qualitative and quantitative equations of basic chemistry to solve chemical problems. Topics include atomic structure, chemical bonding, matter and changes of state, molecular geometry, solutions, the mole concept, acids, bases, buffers and electrolytes. Examples from inorganic, organic, industrial, and biological chemistry will be used to illustrate these underlying principles with a focus on the Health Sciences. Material will be taught using textbook and study guide, lectures, in-class assignments, handouts and online resources.

    CHEM-1006 -  Chemistry 2
    This course builds upon the fundamentals of CHEM 1004 and involves a detailed investigation of organic chemistry and biochemistry. The major classes of organic compounds will be studied focusing on their functional groups, physical and chemical properties and general reactions. Examples from inorganic, organic, industrial, and biological chemistry will be utilized to illustrate these underlying principles with a targeted approach to the Health Sciences. Course material will be taught using textbook and study guide, lectures, in-class assignments, handouts and online resources.

    COMM-3050 -  Writing & Contemporary Health Issues
    This course offers an integrated approach to reading and writing in the health field. Students are given an overview of our health care system and various health topics. Students analyze materials about various contemporary health topics and compose responses and essays. Clear and correct writing, academic research skills, and APA documentation are important learning outcomes.

    HLTH-1032 -  Success Strategies in Health Professions
    The course will enable the learner the ability to increase their knowledge and skills in areas such as study techniques, note taking, time management, research and test taking. The learner will be provided the opportunity to explore personal perceptions and attitudes; determine their own learning style; and develop personal and academic goals. Health care professions are researched through various media including the Internet, professional journal articles and interviews with both health care program students and professionals. In addition, the learner will identify prefixes, suffixes, roots and medical terms frequently used in health care today. This course is hybrid - 30% online, 70% in class.

    MATH-0013 -  Calculus & Vectors 1
    Math 0013 covers problems involving rates of change, derivatives and vectors. This course will introduce the principle of instantaneous rate of change, including the concepts of limits and continuity, followed by the rules of differentiation as they relate to polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, and trigonometric functions. This course is intended for students who wish to further their education at the university level, where a grade 12 Calculus and Vectors course is a prerequisite.

    MATH-0014 -  Calculus & Vectors 2
    Math 0014 covers problems involving derivatives and vectors. This course will apply the students’ knowledge of derivatives and curve sketching towards problems of optimization. In addition, this course will cover problems involving the geometry and algebra of vectors, and the representation of lines and planes in three-dimensional space. This course, along with MATH-0013, is intended for students who wish to further their education at the university level, where a grade 12 Calculus and Vectors course is a prerequisite.

    MATH-0015 -  Prep for Calculus & Vectors
    This course reviews and extends students’ experiences with functions. Students will investigate the properties of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, broaden their knowledge of rates of change, and develop facility in applying these concepts and skills. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in the Calculus and Vectors I and II courses offered at Fanshawe College. This course is highly recommended for those without the high school prerequisite of Advanced Functions (MHF4U1), who have the intention of taking the Calculus and Vectors I and II courses offered at Fanshawe College (MATH-0013 and MATH-0014).

    MATH-1024 -  Mathematics
    This course is designed to provide students with the necessary mathematical skills for solving problems in the Health Science Programs. The course will include operations with real numbers and algebraic expressions, solving and graphing equations, operations with rational expressions and formulas, and applications of basic geometry and trigonometry.

    MATH-1028 -  Mathematics
    This course is designed to provide the students with more advanced algebraic skills for solving problems in the Health Science Programs. The course will include functions and their graphs, solving radical, quadratic, exponential and logarithmic equations with a brief introduction to basic statistics.

    MATH-3079 -  Calculus & Vectors
    This course is a Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors equivalent and is divided into two modules. In the calculus module, students will develop their understanding of rates of change and the relationship between a function and its derivative for various functions. In the vectors module, students will solve problems involving geometric and algebraic representations of vectors and representations of lines and planes in two-space and three-space. Both modules will have a strong focus on application problems.

    MATH-3080 -  Advanced Functions
    This course is a preparatory course for MATH 3079, Calculus and Vectors. It is based on the Ontario standards for Grade 12 Advanced Functions and will cover topics such as evaluating, graphing, combining and solving functions, specifically polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions.

    PHYS-1005 -  Physical Sciences I
    Physical Sciences I is the first of two courses which describe basic principles of physics required for students in health sciences. Specific areas of study include Newtonian mechanics, work, kinetic and potential energy, power, simple machines, properties of fluids at rest, properties of fluids in motion, pressure and density of fluids, and a discussion of some clinical applications pertaining to pressure and gases. Students will be introduced to problem solving strategies in physics and will apply their learning to many biological, biomedical, and physiological applications.

    PHYS-1009 -  Physical Sciences 2
    This course builds on information learned in Physical Sciences 1 and includes specific areas of study such as static and current electricity, electric fields and forces, electric potential, electric potential energy, electrical circuits, magnetic fields and magnetic forces, the relationship between electric current and magnetic fields, wave physics, electromagnetic radiation, and radioactive decay. The course will also include discussions of biomedical applications including membrane potentials, excitable cells, nuclear medicine, and therapeutic and diagnostic applications of the above phenomena.

    SOCI-1074 -  Sociology of Health Care
    This course examines fundamental topics which relate to health and health care in our society. Through the introduction to social factors influencing health, illness and medicine this course will examine the relationship between social structures, health and health care, and health care professions and occupations.

    SOCI-1075 -  Sociology of Health & Illness
    This course builds upon the fundamental topics which relate to health and health care in our society in SOCI-1074. This course will review topics in health, illness and medicine from a sociological perspective and begin to incorporate the relationship between social structures, health and health care, and health care professions and occupations as they pertain to new technologies, health care roles and the associated ethical issues that may arise. Students will learn to apply their knowledge of the complex Canadian health care system and its delivery to evaluate several topical and modern ethical issues.

    WRIT-1048 -  Reason & Writing 1 for Health Sciences
    This course will introduce health sciences students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.

    Program Description

    The Pre-Health Science program provides students with the opportunity to study subject areas relevant to health career programs at Fanshawe College and to instill an appreciation of the professional roles, responsibilities and academic requirements of health care disciplines. The goal of the program is to prepare students for their chosen health career program.

    Other Information

    The Pre-Health Science Program is delivered over two 15-week terms (level one and level two). For students studying in the Pre-Health Science program at the London Campus, there are two possible entry points into the program:

         - Students entering level one of the program in September will proceed to level two of the program in January (upon successful completion of Level One). The entire program will be completed in April.

         - Students entering level one of the program in January will proceed to level two of the program in May (upon successful completion of Level One). The entire program will be completed in August.

    • Domestic students entering the program in January should be aware that they will not have marks available from level one of the Pre-Health Science program at the time admission decisions will be made for Health career programs that start in September 2016. Students are encouraged to complete their Ontario College Certificate from the Pre-Health Science program and apply for admission consideration to a Health career program for September 2017.
    • International students entering the program in January may be granted direct admission into their desired career program in Fall, 2016 if they are among the top applicants in this group, and they satisfy the requirements for international applicants outlined by the admissions office.
    • It is strongly recommended that students entering the Pre-Health Science program have access to the Internet.

    This is a highly competitive program; the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of seats available at the London Campus.

    Learning Outcomes 

    The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

    1. Discuss basic scientific concepts (in biology, physics, chemistry), particularly as they relate to the human body and its care.

    2. Discuss the Canadian Health Care System and the role of the various careers within that system.

    3. Relate knowledge gained across a wide range of subjects to self and society.

    4. a. Develop communication competence for entry into the health care delivery.

    4. b. Develop clarity of thought and comprehension for entry into the health care delivery.

    5. Employ critical thinking processes and problem-solving techniques.
