In the Fanshawe Business – Payroll and Bookkeeping program, you’ll focus your career goals, sharpening your accounting principles on cutting-edge computer software, enhancing your bookkeeping, payroll, compensation and benefits knowledge. You’ll have the foundation to evolve with the always changing business sector. Available in a traditional in class format, with September admission.
Co-operative Education is a process which combines your studies with paid, related work experience. Fanshawe will be there to help you find the right business fit for your dream. You’ll have access to consultants who will deliver classes, counsel and advise you as you move from the classroom, to the real business world.
There are options to transfer to the Business-Accounting program or complement your diploma with a graduate certificate offered at Fanshawe College. You can also be eligible to complete a degree program at many other post-secondary institutions.

English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:
- A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years. SDS Program Requirements.
- Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years
- A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years
- An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
- Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

- Applicants who do not meet the stated admission requirements for the Business - Payroll and Bookkeeping (Co-op) program should apply to the one-year Business Fundamentals Ontario College Certificate program, Program Code BFS2. The Business Fundamentals program is recommended for students who require or desire academic upgrading, particularly in Mathematics and English, before pursuing a business diploma program. Students who successfully complete the Business Fundamentals program may be eligible for admission to Level 2 of any two-year business diploma program at Fanshawe College.
- Applicants may apply for advanced standing on the basis of previous academic achievement at another institution and/or Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). Advanced standing qualifies the applicant for direct entry to a second or higher level of the program.

|This course introduces the student to the Principles of Accounting, and includes an exploration of the underlying concepts that guide the preparation of accounts for individuals and organizations. It is designed to teach the student, regardless of program destination, an essential life skill - an understanding of Net Worth, and its importance to business success and the financial well being of the individual.|

|This course explores the various functional areas of business in Canada and demonstrates the interrelationship among these areas. Students are introduced to many concepts, including major business trends, the role of government in business, marketing, operations, employee-management issues, financial resources management, business ethics and social responsibility.|
|BUSI-1060||Strategies for Success||1|
|This course presents and helps to develop some of the skills required to achieve academic and career success. Areas of focus include college resources, study skills, time management, academic integrity, emotional self-awareness and social skills development. Additionally, emphasis is placed on career readiness and preparation.|
|This course provides a review of basic arithmetic and algebra as well as providing students with mathematical tools and concepts needed for other college courses and in future employment. This course is to prepare students for later courses in Marketing, Business, Financial Planning, Accounting, Purchasing and Insurance.|

|This course is designed to provide an overview of the decisions that face Marketers in today's fast-paced and competitive business environment. Students will learn that marketing is not only advertising but a broad set of activities designed to satisfy consumer needs and wants. Students examine the information Marketers require for effective decision-making and learn the basic elements of the marketing planning process.|

|This course will introduce business students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.|
|COOP-1020||Co-operative Education Employment Prep||1|
|This workshop will provide an overview of the Co-operative Education consultants and students' roles and responsibilities as well as the Co-operative Education Policy. It will provide students with employment preparatory skills specifically related to co-operative education work assignments and will prepare students for their work term.|
|ACCT-1011||Principles of Accounting 2||5|
|This course is a continuation of the study of Financial Accounting at an introductory level. Students will cover additional material related to: - Asset, liability, and owners'/shareholders' equity, revenue and expense accounts - Accounting for partnerships and corporations - Analysis of financial statements, including balance sheet and income statement - Retained earnings and cash flow|
|An introduction to computer applications is undertaken in its relation to general business practices. Topics include an overview of information technology using computers and printers, file management, and utilizing the Internet for research. Specific applications include Microsoft OneNote, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The contents of lessons and projects simulate situations encountered in general business processes.|
|This course develops students' literacy and professional communication skills. Students focus on current business issues and convey relevant meaning in oral and written format. The main themes of the course include writing reports and other relevant business documents (e.g. letters, short reports); communicating in groups and meetings; awareness of intercultural communication and diverse audiences; the job search (including resumes and cover letters); business; business rhetoric in speaking and writing; summarizing and evaluating current business-related readings; delivering presentations; researching and documenting reports using APA format; and self-editing skills.|
|ACCT-1098||Applied Computer App's for Accounting 2||3|
|ACCT-1098 teaches a practical approach to capturing, processing and communicating accounting data using accounting software. QuickBooks and Sage 50 software is used to record and analyze transactions. Accounting cycle topics include: daily and month-end entries, accounts receivable and accounts payable accounting processes, banking and reporting. The content of lessons, assignments, and tests are based on the practice(s) of accounting in Canadian Business.|
|ACCT-1097||Applied Computer App's for Accounting 1||3|
|ACCT-1097 provides students with computer and accounting software skills with specific focus on Microsoft Excel. Throughout the course, emphasis is put on software utilization within accounting situations and use of accounting specific functions.|
|Designed to provide students with an understanding of the objectives, principles and administration of income taxation in Canada, this course covers employment, business, property, capital gains, other income, deductions,tax credits and the calculation of taxes payable for individual residents in Canada. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to prepare personal income tax returns using commercial software.|
|Organizational behaviour (OB) theories and concepts are applicable to various work settings-private, public, for-profit, and not-for-profit. This course investigates how individuals, groups, and structures influence and are, in turn, influenced by behaviours in organizations. Discussion will focus on topics that include: history of OB; evolution of organizational structure, design and culture; work place productivity, employee skills and technology demands; conflict resolution; interpersonal skills; legislation related to workplace discrimination and harassment; leadership; and management of change, power, and organizational politics.|
|ACCT-1088||Payroll Compliance Legislation||3|
|Students who complete this course will know the payroll compliance responsibilities that affect organizations, be able to comprehend payroll legislation, and be able to effectively communicate these to all stakeholders. This course will provide students with the payroll-related legislation affecting organizations, as well as the tools to find information and apply that information to different scenarios in relation to individual pay.|
|Students in this course are introduced to Canadian employment law and its relationship with human resources management. The focus will be on current federal and provincial legislation affecting the non-unionized environment. The Canadian legal framework will be reviewed, including statutory and common law and the judicial system. The legal context of the entire employment relationship from hiring to ending the relationship and beyond will be examined. From an assigned case, students will predict a case outcome using statutory and common law and their own interpretation of the facts of the case.|
|This introductory course emphasizes management accounting topics such as financial statement analysis, budgets, nature of costs etc. This will allow the student to understand the role of accounting in business and how accounting data is used in the decision making process.|
|ACCT-3042||Payroll Fundamentals 2||3|
|Students who complete this course will be able to calculate and report the government and third party remittances, year-end requirements and accounting for payroll at the compliance level for the organization. Students will be able to effectively communicate these organizational processes and requirements to internal and external stakeholders.|
|BUSI-1002||Work Issues & Ethics||3|
|This course will provide the student with a platform which to base both business and personal decision making within the context of various moral and ethical principles. Topics include the relationship between business and society, theoretical bases for ethical decision making, ethical capitalism and relativism, regulating business, stakeholder relations and marketplace ethics. The relationship between business and the environment will also be explored, with particular emphasis on corporate social responsibility and sustainability.|
|BUSI-1070||Small Business Ownership||3|
|In BUSI 1070, the major project consists of constructing a business plan for a new enterprise. The student is expected to understand and apply the concepts learned from previous courses. The project requires the student to integrate core topics such as small business finance, marketing and operations. Additional course material explores alternatives to starting a business such as buying an existing business or franchise and/or taking over the family business.|
|MGMT-3048||Compensation & Benefits Administration||3|
|This course will provide students with an understanding of the process, issues, and techniques involved in administering a compensation system. Students will learn both the theoretical and applied aspects of the compensation function; the linkage between the compensation function and the organizational management process; and the compensation system design necessary to attract, retain and motivate the required workforce. This course is HRPA approved and is required to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 1 (CKE1) and/or the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 2 (CKE2). These exams are part of the attainment of the externally accredited entry level Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation (CKE1) and/or the advanced level Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation (CKE2), respectively. You must achieve a minimum of 65% in any one of the nine CHRP/CHRL courses and an overall average of 70% in these nine courses to be eligible to write the CKE1 and/or CKE 2. |ACCT-1087||Payroll Fundamentals 1||3|
|Students who complete this course will be able to apply payroll legislation and calculate individual pay. This includes all components of individual pay from remuneration, through deductions, to net pay for both regular and non-regular situations. Students will have the content and skills to effectively communicate all aspects of the individual pay calculation process to external and internal stakeholders.|
|Case based course where students will perform all aspects of the payroll function.|
|Organizations and individuals need to be innovative to succeed in the complex and rapidly-changing global marketplace. In this course you will learn the fundamentals of innovation and how innovation applies to your discipline or field.Using this foundational knowledge, you will apply the novel and adaptive thinking processes and tools presented in the course to complete an innovative learning project in collaboration with other students.The project will be based on a real-world scenario with a defined scope as chosen by your professor. The project may involve external live clients and a multi-disciplinary approach.Throughout the course, novel and adaptive thinking skills as well as collaboration skills will be evaluated through self assessment.This course is designed to give students in certificate and diploma programs a foundation in innovative thinking.|

Program DescriptionBusiness - Payroll and Bookkeeping (Co-op) is a two-year Ontario College Diploma program with a co-operative education component. The program provides graduates with knowledge of 1) payroll and human resources practices including compensation and benefits, and 2) bookkeeping practices and related accounting software applications. Graduates will have met the educational requirements for the Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation and will have three advanced standing credits towards completion of the Certified Payroll Manager designation with the Canadian Payroll Association (CPA). In addition, graduates will have also completed the academic requirements for the Certified Bookkeeper designation with the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping (CIB). Graduates will be well prepared for self-employment or for entry-level careers in accounting, bookkeeping, taxation and payroll administration in a variety of industries.
- The Business - Payroll and Bookkeeping (Co-op) program shares a common first level with all business diploma programs in the Lawrence Kinlin School of Business which allows for program transfer, with no loss of credit, after Level 1.
- Graduates will have met the educational requirements for the Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation and will have three advanced standing credits towards completion of the Certified Payroll Manager designation with the Canadian Payroll Association (CPA). In addition, graduates will have also completed the academic requirements for the Certified Bookkeeper designation with the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping (CIB). For both the CPA and CIB credits to be awarded, students must meet minimum grade requirements.
- Graduates may be eligible for admission to the following Graduate Certificate programs in the Lawrence Kinlin School of Business: Agri-Business Management, Human Resources Management, International Business Management, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Marketing Management, Operations Management, Professional Financial Services, or Project Management. Graduate Certificate programs deliver a specialized professional curriculum in two four-month levels.
- This program is eligible for consideration of college to college transfer of credits under the Ontario Provincial ONCAT agreement.
Co-operative EducationIn order to be eligible for co-op, students must maintain a 2.5 GPA and be academically complete at the commencement of their co-op work term.

1. Maintain paper and electronic accounting records and prepare financial statements for sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

4. Support the financial management of a business organization including the preparation of financial information by using relevant and current mathematical techniques.
5. Support the accounting functions including maintaining records and preparing financial statements and reports and processing payroll through the application of current and relevant computer skills and knowledge of accounting information systems.
6. Recognize the impact of the operations of functional areas of an organization on its financial performance.
7. Recognize, within the context of the Canadian business environment, the impact of factors such as economic variables, legislation, and ethics on business operations.
8. Support the accounting, human resource and payroll functions of an organization through the application of contemporary business communication practices and effective interpersonal skills.
9. Prepare, maintain, and communicate accurate information related to pensions administration.
10. Plan personal professional development to enhance knowledge of current issues, trends, and practices in the payroll profession.
