You'll discover how to design, install, troubleshoot and maintain microcomputer systems and networking equipment. You'll also learn how to install, configure and administer operating systems from Microsoft and UNIX, and study advanced topics in network management, communication protocols, security, web support, database servers and mail servers.
In today's IT sector, you need more than technical skills. The co-op component of the program will provide hands-on experience in real working situations. You'll develop your communication and interpersonal skills to work with all levels of computer users in the business world.

English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:
- A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 550 for the paper-based test (PBT), or 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years. SDS Program Requirements.
- Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two year
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years
- A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years
- An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
- Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

BUSI-1156 Strategies for Success 1 This course presents and helps to develop some of the skills required to achieve academic and career success. Areas of focus include college resources, study skills, time management, academic integrity and calculating Grade Point Averages, among other skills. INFO-1135 Networking Fundamentals-CCNA 5 This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of networking; from fundamentals to advanced applications, thereby providing a solid foundation upon which to build their Local Area Network (LAN) & Wide Area Network (WAN) training. It is based on a bottom-up approach to networking and emphasizes the concepts and skills required to design networks, while providing opportunities for practical application and hands-on experience by teaching students how to install, operate, and maintain networks. INFO-1167 Business At the Speed of Light 3 Increasingly, technology is used as the underpinnings to enable a new global business model. This course explores the fundamental concepts of business as well as the technologies that are used to facilitate a new era of entrepreneurial opportunities. Students are introduced to the role of business and government and explore the various types of business, business & marketing operations, and financial resources management. In addition, students reinforce their knowledge of the subject matter through a series of case studies that explore the use of technology to solve business problems and enable new opportunities. INFO-1213 Applications for Information Technology 3 Students learn to produce documents using many of the industry standard Microsoft applications. Students will use operating system commands and produce a variety of documents using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Visio. Helping to produce professional and effective business communications with internal and external clients in a rapidly changing environment. INFO-1178 Configuring Windows Client 3 This course focusses on configuring and maintaining a Windows client operating system. Students learn to install and upgrade the operating system and manage drivers, applications, network connections, and resource access. Students learn how to create backups and use different recovery methods. The course can lead toward Microsoft certification.
WRIT-1043 Reason & Writing 1 for IT 3 This course will introduce information technology students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking. WRIT-1034 Reason & Writing 1-EAP 4 This course will introduce students whose first language is not English to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking. Special attention will also be paid to developing academic vocabulary, correcting common ESL errors, enhancing academic listening and note-taking skills, and improving oral fluency and confidence. Level 2 Credits INFO-3132 Business Applications Support 3 This course will develop a student's ability to support clients who depend on information technology services to do their jobs. It will help prepare students to provide efficient and effective technical support to clients in a manner that promotes safe computing practices and reduces the risk of the issue recurring. INFO-3118 Routing & Switching Essentials-CCNA 5 This course provides a comprehensive and practical approach to learning the technologies, concepts, and protocols necessary to design and implement a switched and routed network. Students learn about Cisco's hierarchical network design model and how to select devices for each layer. The course explains fundamental routing and switching concepts and how to configure a switch and router for basic functionality. Students will build on this foundation by analyzing and learning how to implement Virtual LANs, Inter-VLAN routing, DHCPv4 and DHCPv6, NAT, and Single-Area OSPF. Network security concepts are introduced and students learn how to implement security on switches and routers. This course is a part of the Cisco Networking Academy Program - CCNA3 Cisco Certified Network Associate curriculum. MGMT-3052 Understanding Workplace Behaviours 3 This course provides an understanding of the field of organizational behaviour through investigating individual, group and organizational behaviours. Students assess their work-related preferences/behaviours using self-assessment surveys and reflect on the match between those and career choices. Students study organizational design, organizational culture, people-centred management, social perception, self-concept & personality, values/attitudes & job satisfaction, motivation theory, group development theory, effective communication strategy, and conflict & negotiation then apply these concepts to the development of an organization's human resources. INFO-1180 Computer Hardware & Data Centre Elements 3 This course is an introduction to the design, implementation and support of Personal Computers and the utilization of PC technology in the corporate client-server model. Concepts range from current clients to servers and storage infrastructure in the Data Centre environment. Topics include basic electronics and DC power systems, PC architecture, desktop assembly and troubleshooting as well as server design, fault tolerance, data storage, backup systems, and disaster recovery planning and procedures. RAID and power control systems will be included. Conceptual coverage is combined with reinforcing hands-on lab activities in the workbench environment. Basic tools are required. INFO-1179 Windows Server Fundamentals 4 This course will provide students with the fundamentals to install and configure a Windows Server environment. Students will focus on the basic administration of an Active Directory Environment and Windows Services. On successful completion, students working towards their Microsoft Accreditation will have the knowledge to write a certification exam. INFO-1124 Computer Security Concepts 3 Learn the foundation and role of the security professional (ethical hacker) through an introduction to computer security. Common hacker network attacks will be studied to strengthen the knowledge of the security professional. Topics in this course will demonstrate the security principles, networking operations, protocols, encryption types and methods, as well as password security with a focus in hands on learning techniques. Level 3 Credits INFO-3133 Linux Operating Systems 3 Open Source Operating System are becoming a part of mainstream enterprise implementations. The intent of this course is to introduce students with the basics of Linux Operating System functions. Students will be instructed in the skills needed to install and utilize a production quality distribution of the Linux Operating System. INFO-3014 Database Servers 3 This course is an introduction to the basics of working with relational databases and database servers. Students will learn database server administration and the Structured Query Language using Microsoft SQL Server. INFO-3119 Scaling Networks-CCNA 5 This course describes the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in larger and more complex networks. Students learn how to configure routers and switches for advanced functionality. By the end of this course, students will be able to implement and troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with OSPF, EIGRP, and STP in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks. COMM-3077 Communications for IT 3 This course, designed for students who plan to work in the field of information technology, focuses on professional written communication skills. Students learn to prepare a variety of work-related documents. In addition, students learn about research methods and documentation formats. The principles of effective writing organization, grammar, style, clarity and tone are reinforced throughout the course. The goal of the course is to prepare students for the communication tasks and considerations they will encounter in the workplace. COOP-1020 Co-operative Education Employment Prep 1 This workshop will provide an overview of the Co-operative Education consultants and students' roles and responsibilities as well as the Co-operative Education Policy. It will provide students with employment preparatory skills specifically related to co-operative education work assignments and will prepare students for their work term. INFO-3099 Scripting for Systems Administration 3 This course will cover fundamental concepts of programming as it relates to producing scripts for administration of the Windows operating system. Visual Basic Scripting language (VBS) and Microsoft Powershell will be used as the primary tool of instruction. INFO-3115 Administering Windows Servers 4 This course expands on the students fundamental knowledge of Windows Servers. Students will receive training for administering a Windows environment with focus on deployment, optimization, protection, management, remote access and monitoring. On successful completion, students working towards their Microsoft Accreditation will have the knowledge to write a certification exam. Level 4 Credits MGMT-3036 Professional Development-Career Planning 3 This course introduces the student to the nature and role of Human Resource functions in an organization, with a focus on the implications for personal career management. Human resources planning and processes will be explored through class discussion, research and case study, from the perspectives of the employer and the employee / job applicant. Work search skills and resume writing will be included, along with an individual career management project. INFO-5108 Windows Servers-Adv 4 In this course, students will further their knowledge by designing and implementing advanced features of Active Directory, Windows and Virtual Server failover clustering, Disaster Recovery and advanced file and network services. On successful completion, students working towards their Microsoft Accreditation will have the knowledge to write a certification exam. INFO-5111 Linux Operating Systems-Adv 4 With the increasing trend towards Open Systems implementations in enterprise, this course will focus on installing and running in a mixed environment of Windows and Linux Operating Systems. Topics include the advanced study of various application services available in Linux environment and cross platform integration issues resulting from mixed environment. INFO-5109 WAN Protocols-CCNA 4 This course discusses the WAN technologies and services required by converged applications in a complex network. Students will learn how to configure and troubleshoot networks and common issues with data link protocols. Students will also gain the knowledge and skills needed to implement secure IPSec and VPN solutions. INFO-5110 Technical Project 4 This technical project will allow students to build a complex infrastructure. Students will work in teams on a project designed to demonstrate the network and systems administration skills learned throughout semesters 1 through 4. The scenario describes the project in general terms, and will explain how to build the infrastructure. Level 5 Credits INFO-3116 Microsoft Exchange Server 3 This course will take students into the realm of Microsoft Exchange Server and teach them how to deploy it in a business environment successfully and manage the various features through theory, practical work as well as case studies. Knowledge of Windows Server and Active Directory are essential. The course provides a path toward certification in Microsoft Exam 70-341. INFO-5081 Advanced Routing-CCNP 4 This course teaches students how to implement, monitor, and maintain routing services in an enterprise network. Student will learn how to plan, configure, optimize and verify the implementation of complex enterprise LAN and WAN routing solutions, using a range of routing protocols in IPv4 and IPv6 environments. Comprehensive labs emphasize hands-on learning and practice to reinforce configuration skills. INFO-5082 Multilayer Switching-CCNP 4 This course covers the important knowledge and skills necessary to implement scalable multilayer switched networks. Topics covered include: Campus Networks, describing and implementing advanced Spanning Tree concepts, VLANs and Inter-VLAN routing, High Availability, Wireless Client Access, Access Layer Voice concepts, and minimizing service Loss and Data Theft in a Campus Network. INFO-5096 Managing & Budgeting Technical Projects 3 Managing IT projects requires a multi-disciplinary approach that involves critical analysis, written and verbal communication skills, and interpersonal teambuilding skills. Creating and responding to RFPs, working with/as outsourced vendors, identifying tasks and resources required, budgets, timelines, and ongoing project maintenance are discussed. Students will use Microsoft Project and other tools to simulate resource scheduling, track progress, perform reporting, and close a project. INFO-5091 Data Management & Storage-Adv 4 Students will learn about the architectures, features, and benefits of Intelligent Storage Systems; storage networking technologies such as FC-SAN, IP-SAN, NAS, Object-based and unified storage; business continuity solutions such as backup, replication, and archive; the increasingly critical area of information security; and the emerging field of cloud computing. INFO-5121 Enterprise Virtualization Technologies 4 This course prepares you to install, configure and administer a software-defined virtualized data center infrastructure for an organization of any size. Level 6 Credits INFO-5123 Firewalls & Network Monitoring 3 The purpose, implementation and limitations of firewall to control network access will be explored through lecture and hands on labs. The focus will be on hardware firewall solutions, such as the Cisco ASA. The other component of this course involves network monitoring and implementing technologies to balance security and performance. INFO-5112 Cloud Services 4 This advanced course explores concepts and the theory of cloud computing. Students will gain practical experience by installing a private cloud platform. They will familiarize cloud services (i.e., Infrastructure as a Service, Software as a Service, and Database as a Service) through accessing the available API developed by different cloud vendors such as Microsoft, OpenStack, and others. Finally, the students will develop and deploy different on-premises software including web and database applications in a cloud computing platform such as Microsoft Azure. INFO-5124 Voice Over IP 4 This course covers the important knowledge and skills necessary to setup, troubleshoot and manage a Voice over IP solution. On-Line lectures and hands on labs will provide and test the knowledge needed to deploy and administrator telephony collaboration features using Cisco's unified communications solution. INFO-5105 Technical Project-Adv 6 This is an applied project course where students will work in teams on a multi-location corporate technology project designed to apply the network, operating systems and application services knowledge and skills learned in previous and current semesters. INFO-5122 Integrated Collaborations Systems 3 Students will learn how to install, configure and manage various collaboration services such as Skype for Business, SharePoint, etc. This course will focus on accessing these systems both on and off premise as well as integration between collaborative technologies.

The Computer Systems Technology program is an accredited, three-year co-operative education, Ontario College Advanced Diploma program which provides comprehensive training for students wishing to work in the high demand areas of network, security, virtualization, data storage and management and systems operation and management. This program provides the students the ability to be effective team leaders, think critically, solve problems and acquire new skills quickly.
Under the guidance of expert faculty, combined with the use of leading edge labs, the program emphasizes the design, implementation, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, management, as well as the hands-on installation of networking, security, VoIP, mobile devices, virtualization, data storage and management, server, workstation and operating systems technologies.
Instruction in project management, communication and interpersonal skills prepare the student to effectively interact with all levels of users in both oral and written mediums.
Upon completion of the program, and in addition to the highly valued Ontario College Advanced Diploma, graduates should have the knowledge and skills to take exams for the following certifications, if they choose to do so: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP). Graduates may also choose to apply the knowledge gained to prepare and test for other industry certifications, such as those offered for Microsoft, Linux, VMWare and EMC2.
- Students in this program will be required to take an online general education elective in Level 6.
- Graduates of the Fanshawe College Business Fundamentals Ontario College Certificate program who meet the admission requirements can apply to Level 1 of the Computer Systems Technology Advanced Ontario College Diploma program and may be granted up to three internal credits towards this program.
- A laptop computer is to be purchased by the student.
- A CONNECT lab fee is included in the Additional Program Fees stated in the Fee Schedule. This fee helps cover costs associated with the delivery of the CONNECT mobile computing program.
- Students should not purchase a laptop computer or software until the College publishes the recommended configuration, models, software titles and versions for that academic year.
Co-operative EducationThis three-year program has three co-op work terms. Students who fulfill both the academic and co-op requirements of the program will be eligible to graduate with a Co-op Endorsed Diploma.
