This one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program builds on your existing skills, giving you the tools you need for a career in a variety of roles in the digital media industry.

Overview

The Interactive Media Specialist program will prepare you for an evolving job market, providing intensive training in web technologies with an emphasis on web application design, interactive media and emerging technologies. The curriculum combines courses in front-end programming, back-end programming and design while incorporating industry-standard tools from companies such as Adobe, Maxon, etc., as well as open-source technologies for Web application development.

You will be exposed to each major aspect of the multimedia production cycle, including layout design, and branding, content and asset creation, ‘front-end’ coding as well as 'back-end' coding and database implementation.

Graduate with a dynamic and diverse skill set that will match the dynamic world of the web, equipped with the tools to evolve alongside the new world of online entertainment.

Front-End Web Developer

Use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build websites that are responsive, interactive and user-friendly

Full-Stack Developer

Work with both front-end and back-end coding languages. Full-Stack Developers able to work on every step of the web development process, including responsive web design, back-end programming and databases.

Graphic/Web Designer

Make decisions about layout, fonts and images to create usable and aesthetically pleasing websites.

Learning Outcomes

1. Facilitate effective completion of both individual and collaborative interactive media projects.

2. Use and evaluate the best practices and tools to design and develop dynamic, rich media content.

3. Conduct and evaluate a thorough assessment of the requirements of a complex interactive media project.

4. Coordinate the development, budgeting, planning and professional presentation of a complex interactive media project.

5. Design and coordinate a complex media project (interface, navigation, graphics, text treatment) using best practice design and development principles and applying conceptual and theoretical frameworks.

6. Manage the building of effective and dynamic complex Web sites and/or mobile applications.

7. Propose solutions to ethical and professional issues arising in an online environment.

8. Apply research and conceptual skills to propose optimal solutions for mobile/multimedia/Web development problems and facilitate these skills within the project team.

9. Provide creative leadership that results in the effective design, development and implementation of complex interactive media projects.

10. Evaluate the financial, technical and artistic success of a complex interactive media project and present recommendations for improvement.

A College Diploma or College Advanced Diploma in:

     - Broadcast Journalism - Television News

English Language Requirements

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

  • A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 88 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.5 with no score less than 6.0 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years.  SDS Program Requirements.  
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 70 with no score less than 60 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 59, with test results within the last two years
  • A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 176 with no language skill less than 169, with test results within the last two years
  • An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 75% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
  • Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9 or 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:
  1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
  2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)

Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
MMED-6004Visual Communication 13
Extending topics introduced in the two-year MMDP diploma program, this course covers the use of Cinema 4d, After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator for Motion Graphics and asset creation for UI Design in the development of Interactive Applications.
MMED-6000Advanced Multimedia Technologies 13
This course will explore the fundamentals of programming then move to Front-End JavaScript-based interactive media. Advanced OOP JS concepts will be introduced to further build up the core coding competency of each student. Students will be introduced to Back-End javascript using Node.js and Express.js. Students will also be exposed to project management and version control which will be leveraged for use in large-scale projects involving multiple teams/team members next semester. Independent research and development are strongly emphasized.
MMED-6005Advanced Streaming Technologies 13
This course covers advanced topics for developing dynamic Web applications. Students will learn how to implement OOP concepts in PHP, create relational databases, and use MVC frameworks for back-end Web application development. Topics and projects from MMED 6007 will also be integrated into the content for this course.
MMED-6002Interactive Story & Concept 13
This course will explore the creation of Interactive Media applications and Project management as well as thesis preparation critical for the success of the final Thesis.
MMED-6001Advanced Web Technologies 13
Extending topics introduced in the two-year MMDP diploma program, this course covers client-side Web technologies for desktop and mobile applications. Focusing on the open-source solutions for dynamic Web applications, students will learn how to implement core Javascript and current libraries to create complex, dynamic HTML5 Web sites and mobile applications. This course will also integrate with MMED 6005 to introduce rich-media solutions to the open-source PHP-mySQL model.Independent research and development is strongly emphasized.
