You'll focus your learning on machine trade theory, machine shop, mechanical blueprint reading and applied mathematics and Computer Aided Design (CAD). You'll get hands on experience with the computer applications and software used in Computer Aided Machining (CAM) and Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) programs. You'll have cutting –edge knowledge for the always evolving computer manufacturing world. Plus, There's also a mandatory co-op placement in year two of the program, so you can earn while you learn, testing your knowledge in real situations, in real machine shops.

Completion of all courses in the Mechanical Techniques – CNC program at Fanshawe College
Completion of courses from another institution as judged by the College to be equivalent to the above
A combination of relevant education and work experience in a related field as judged by the College to be equivalent to the above
Important Information: Students wishing to enter the first year of the program MUST apply to the Mechanical Techniques - CNC program.
Applicant Selection Criteria
Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:
- Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
- Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)

Mechanical Technician - CNC/CAM-2018/2019
Level 1 DRAF-1056 Blueprint Reading 3 This basic course introduces the student to mechanical blueprint reading. Topics covered will include lines, dimensioning, tolerances, types of projection and methods to interpret working drawings. CADD-1058 Computer Aided Design 1 3 This course is designed to introduce the student to two and three dimensional CAD (computer aided design) using Solidworks software. Topics will include: set up of user interface, file management, creating and editing two dimensional sketch geometry, creating solid models, analyzing and editing geometry to ensure compatibility for use in toolpaths, and creating engineering drawings. COMP-1336 Computer Literacy 2 This course will introduce students to various computer concepts, including hardware, operating systems, word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. Through lecture and hands-on classes, the student will learn each units everyday uses and apply them to their courses. MACH-1130 Conventional Machine Shop 1 5.5 This course will enable the student to produce machined metal parts to the specifications of a technical drawing, by means of safely operating milling machines, lathes, and surface grinders. COMM-1004 Language & Communication Skills 1 3 COMM1004 provides the student with an opportunity to establish skills in reading, writing and editing documents for work-related and personal uses. Students will also practice important study/reading skills and apply grammar rules. MECH-1075 Conventional Machining Theory 3 This course is an introductory metal machining theory course covering safety, metrology, drills, lathes, grinders and milling machines. MATH-1158 Mathematics 1 1 A practical mathematics application course on topics relevant to mechanical techniques (CNC). Level 2 CADD-3023 Computer Aided Design 2 2 This course is an introduction to using a CAD software package to create CAD data. The students will learn the essential skills to create 2D geometry and working drawings. MACH-1131 Computer Numerical Control 1 4.5 This course will enable the student to produce machined metal parts to the specifications of a technical drawing, by means of safely setting up, programming, and operating CNC machines. The emphasis is on the CNC Mill, however the operations taught apply to many different types of machine tools. MECH-1077 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing 1 1 This is an introductory course designed to introduce students to terms, definitions and concepts used in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. MACH-1129 Jig & Machine Theory 1 This course will introduce the students to concepts related to the design and fabrication of jigs and fixtures that my be required to support CNC operations. It also will cover cutting tool theory and operations as it relates to CNC machining and tooling. MATH-3051 Mathematics 2 1 This course will cover solid geometry, equation manipulation and advanced trigonometry. COMM-1075 Workplace Skills 1 1 This course will cover the essential employability skills required to succeed in today's workplace. Emphasis will be placed on team building, conflict resolution, personal management skills and ethics in business. Level 3 CADD-3024 Computer Aided Design 3 2 This course is a continuation of CADD-3023 (Computer Aided Design 2). The students will learn how to manipulate files, merge data from other software, and create other advanced modeling features and create some basic tool paths. MACH-3048 Computer Numerical Control 2 3.5 This course will enable the student to produce written CNC programs to the specifications of a technical drawing. Programs will be written both for the CNC centre, as well as for the 2 axis CNC lathe. Whereas MACH-1131 emphasized the 'Setup and Operation' of CNC machine tools, Mach-3048 will emphasize the 'Programming' aspects of CNC machines. MECH-1076 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing 2 1 This is an introductory course designed to introduce students to terms, definitions and concepts used in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. MECH-3031 Jig & Fixtures and Machining 2 1 This course will also cover information concerning tooling selection and how it relates to the finished product on a CNC machine. Setup, documentation and monitoring of the process will also be discussed. There will also be an overview of CNC applications in industry. MATH-3053 Mathematics 3 1 This course will cover cutting speeds and spur gear formulas and calculations. It will also contain an introduction to statistics. COMM-3019 Workplace Skills 2 1 This course will cover topics related to team building and customer relations in a quality focused workplace. Students will also examine leadership and conflict management. COOP-1020 Co-operative Education Employment Prep 1 This workshop will provide an overview of the Co-operative Education consultants and students' roles and responsibilities as well as the Co-operative Education Policy. It will provide students with employment preparatory skills specifically related to co-operative education work assignments and will prepare students for their work term. Level 4 CADD-1059 Computer Aided Machining 6 This is a comprehensive level 2D CAM course. The students will learn to generate tool paths on new and previously completed CAD files. The student will generate and verify tool paths of CNC code form 2D and 3D models; some of which will be run on the CNC machine tools. The student will create and import various CAD files from different software packages to create tool paths. The skills learned in this course will prepare the student to work in an engineering/manufacturing environment. MACH-3049 Computer Numerical Control 3 7.5 This course will enable the student to expand on the programming knowledge gained in Mach-3048. Many advanced programming techniques will be covered. These include; 4th axis programming, thread milling, turning shapes with declining slopes, as well as learning to construct programs using variables. MATH-3056 Mathematics 4 2 This applied mathematics course presents students with problems in applied geometry that would help them understand surfaces and solids when working with CNC machines and programs. MACH-1166 Quality Assurance 4 This introductory course examines the concepts and methods used to monitor quality in modern CNC manufacturing environments. There will be an overview of effective inspection methods, data gathering, and other tools used by industry to control production. BUSI-1103 Introduction to Small Business Concepts 3 This introductory course will examine some of the theoretical concepts and practical experiences necessary for effectively running a small business. A wide variety of topics such as the social and ethical responsibility of a contemporary business, the importance of human resource and financial resource management, and the current trends in Canadian business will be studied.

Program DescriptionThe Mechanical Technician - CNC/CAM program provides the student with the necessary knowledge and skills to work in the modern machining environment. In the technician program, the emphasis will be on using software and equipment to develop programs using computer aided machining software. Graduates of this program will have experience in process planning, machine set-up, programming, troubleshooting, implementing quality control procedures and computer numerical controlled machining. Technicians must also possess good communication skills and work well in a team environment. Students entering this program will be registered in Year 1 in the Mechanical Techniques - CNC Ontario College Certificate program. Upon successful completion of the Mechanical Techniques - CNC program, students wishing to obtain advanced programming skills and complete an Ontario College Diploma, will be registered in Year 2 of the Mechanical Technician - CNC/CAM program. In the first year of the program, the student will receive training in conventional machining through courses such as machine trade theory, machine shop, mechanical blueprint reading and applied mathematics. Since computers play an important role in the profession, the courses offered in the program will include an overview of computer applications, numerical control technology and computer aided design in both 2D and 3D modes.
The program has been designed, in consultation with our industry partners, to develop and reinforce important employability skills.
- IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS: Students wishing to enter the first year of the program MUST apply to the Mechanical Techniques - CNC program, Program Code MQC1S.
- Students who successfully complete the requirements for an Ontario College Certificate from the Mechanical Techniques - CNC program and wish to obtain advanced programming skills in the second year of the Mechanical Technician - CNC/CAM program to complete the requirements for an Ontario College Diploma, must complete an "Application for Program Transfer" form available from the Campus Office or from the Office of the Registrar, Room E1012.
- Students should be aware that Level 2 of the Mechanical Techniques - CNC program and Level 3 of the Mechanical Technician - CNC/CAM program are condensed and are completed in sequence within one term. Progression from the Mechanical Techniques - CNC program to the Mechanical Technician - CNC/CAM program includes successful completion of Level 1 (15 weeks) and Level 2 (8 weeks) of the Mechanical Techniques - CNC program and transfer immediately into the Mechanical Technician - CNC/CAM program for Level 3 (7 weeks) and Level 4 (15 weeks) followed by two co-op terms.
Students who fulfill both the academic and co-op requirements of the program will be eligible to graduate with a co-op endorsed diploma. More information about co-operative education can be found at
