Program Overview

In the one-year Ontario College Certificate office administration program, students learn how to communicate efficiently, prepare reports and presentations, as well as general accounting and customer service skills. Graduates are prepared to become competent professionals that managers rely on by offering the latest office computer technology and teaching how to best use your organizational and communication skills to communicate with co-workers, managers, clients and customers.

Your Learning Experience

Skilled administrative support is vital to today's fast-paced business environment. In this one-year program, students will learn from professionals in the field while developing core skills in communication, problem-solving, computer applications, accounting and office procedures.

 

Intermediate training in a variety of computer applications will also be combined with understanding the workplace to prepare for a variety of entry-level office administration career opportunities. Using these skills, students will be capable of producing correspondence, presenting information, providing customer support, responding to routine inquiries and supporting the management of small organizations or a department in a large organization.

 

Throughout the program, students will also have the ability to network with industry contacts through their participation in the International Association of Administrative Professionals (London Chapter). 

 

Graduates who successfully complete this program will leave with a set of highly transferable skills, ready to jump into a successful administrative career or choose to further specialize with one additional year of study to graduate with a diploma in Office Administration - Health Services or Office Administration - Executive.

 

This program is also available part-time.

Train in a Realistic Emergency

Every year, Fanshawe holds an emergency preparedness exercise at its London Campus that simulates realistic emergencies to help test and train students and campus emergency first responders. The College is one of the only post-secondary institutions to provide an experiential learning opportunity on this scale. Students in this program will get the chance to participate in this exciting event.

6. record basic financial information using established document formats, procedures and accounting software.

7. produce routine business documents using available technologies and established standards and formats.

8. use interpersonal and client service skills to respond to diversity and to support the vision and mission of the organization.

9. compile resources as well as services to prepare summary reports.

10. select and use information technologies to support communication with internal and external stakeholders.

11. assist in the organization and coordination of meetings and travel arrangements.

Admission Requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, or mature applicant with the following course:

- Grade 11 or 12 English (C or U) Students who do not meet the admission requirements are recommended for academic upgrading. A conditional offer may be possible with proof of enrolment.

Note:
Graduates of Office Administration-General may choose to transfer into the second Year of the Office Administration-Health Services or Office Administration-Executive programs.

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:
  1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
  2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)

Employees require understanding and an ability to analyze accounting procedures as they relate to accounting principles.This course teaches students the accounting process from an administrative assistant's point of view for a service and merchandising business. Participants will learn to apply accounting theory and procedures to effectively record business transactions into the proper journal and ledger and to use this information to prepare accurate financial statements. You will learn the importance of adjusting and closing entries and the accounting terminology required to function effectively as an administrative assistant.
ADMN-1014Administrative Documentation 14
Keyboarding speed, accuracy, and technique, combined with word processing proficiency, are essential skills required to work in any type of business environment. Introductory word processing concepts and commands will be applied to the production and formatting of administrative documents. Students will apply proofreading techniques to type error-free e-mails, memorandums, letters, tables, and reports.
MATH-1143Fundamental Mathematics for Business3
This course provides the basic mathematical concepts which prepare students for success in their future courses, in particular focusing on computer applications and accounting. Topics are presented in the context of real world applications which students will encounter in the workplace.

This course provides an understanding of the field of organizational behaviour through investigating individual, group and organizational behaviours. Students assess their work-related preferences/behaviours using self-assessment surveys and reflect on the match between those and career choices. Students study organizational design, organizational culture, people-centred management, social perception, self-concept & personality, values/attitudes & job satisfaction, motivation theory, group development theory, effective communication strategy, and conflict & negotiation then apply these concepts to the development of an organization's human resources.
BUSI-1060Strategies for Success1
This course presents and helps to develop some of the skills required to achieve academic and career success. Areas of focus include college resources, study skills, time management, academic integrity, emotional self-awareness and social skills development. Additionally, emphasis is placed on career readiness and preparation.
