Your Learning Experience

In these advanced photography courses, students explore a chosen photographic discipline where projects will be based on their choice of specialization. This can include fashion, food, architecture, product and portrait photography. As a result, you’ll graduate with a professional portfolio that aligns with your career goals. Students will gain advanced photography and post-production skills, such as colour management strategies, still and motion imagery, lighting techniques and studio and location environments in both printed and online presentation formats.

 

Students will explore a chosen discipline where projects will be based on their choice of specialization and result in a professional portfolio that aligns with their career goals. Since photography is an innovative, entrepreneurial field, students will also gain experiences such as marketing and job pricing, by working with real clients as they operate an on-campus service centre that will provide photography to the local community.

 

Throughout the year, students make industry connections through field trips to meet with various photography professionals and visit trade shows and conferences to research new products and future trends in photography.

 

Students are provided with multiple resources. This includes 24/7 access to fully equipped studios, and access to Photo Loans and its collection of professional lenses, lighting equipment and medium format cameras.

 

This program is intended for students who have a solid foundation in DSLR camera operation and want to develop their creativity to a professional standard and be competitive in the field of photography. Many projects require photo editing; therefore, your tuition includes a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud, and Capture One software. Students must provide their own laptop computer, Macbook Pro’s are recommended.

Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

1. Capture still and motion imagery using a broad range of camera equipment, lighting techniques and procedures to suit project requirements.
2. Create professional still and motion imagery in both studio and location environments using knowledge of contemporary processes, procedures, visual styles.
3. Implement colour management strategies to create and maintain a properly colour calibrated work environment which complies with established standards.
4. Create still and motion imagery through the editing of image characteristics, retouching techniques and composite creation using to professional standards in both printed and on-line presentation formats.
5. Interpret the requests of clients to produce photos and videos that fulfil their needs.
6. Develop business procedures for photography and video projects, including requirements and deliverables, budgetary considerations, pricing and contract management, to ensure profitability.
7. Cultivate professional relationships with clients, customers and designers in order to build and sustain a professional practice.
8. Produce a self-promotional cross-media portfolio which highlights one’s innovative, creative skills and technical expertise in photography, print, video and interactive design.
9. Investigate evolving photography trends, issues, technologies and industry practices in the development of professional growth strategies and plans and to develop expertise in a chosen field of work or specialization.

Admission Requirements

A Diploma or Degree in:
- Photography
- Fashion Merchandising
- Fine Art
- Graphic Design
OR
An equivalent qualification from another institution as judged by the College
OR
A combination of relevant education and work experience in a related field as judged by the College to be equivalent to the above and completion of a portfolio.
AND
Successful completion of a Supplemental Evaluation (Note: a minimum grade of 60% is required)

Applicant Selection Criteria

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:
  1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
  2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)
  3. Achievement in the Admission Requirements
  4. Assessment of Applicant�s skill set relevant to the program based on a digital portfolio

Level 1
Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
PHOT-6022Photography Specialization 16
This course gives the student the opportunity to specialize in his/her chosen photographic specialty. Each student has the opportunity to major in Portrait (people/event), Commercial (product/fashion/industrial/architectural). Each student will also have the option to choose a Minor in various areas of Photography. During the academic year, participation in competitions and exhibitions is compulsory. Judging and evaluation of images to professional standards is an integral learning tool incorporated in this course.
ENTP-6007Creative Industries for Photography5
Students will operate an on-campus service bureau that provides photography/video/printing service to the college and local community. Students will also work as freelance talent providing the services. Students will create promotional and pricing material to market their services. Students will participate in interviews with potential clients or employers. This course will instill entrepreneurship and professional business practices, including pricing for jobs, setting deadlines and providing good customer service. This course will include a research component, exploring new technologies, services and marketing strategies. Student will be required to attend and/or participate in industry trade shows.
PHOT-6023Video Production 16
Using DSLR cameras with HD Video capabilities and Adobe Premiere, student will gain a better understanding of the skills and workflows required to be successful in a Video Production / Post-Production Environment.
GRAF-6001Digital Master Class 14
This course deals with the production of high resolution finished photographic artwork using primarily, Adobe Photoshop and may include other software. Working with supplied images, or with their own photographs, students will learn advanced editing techniques to produce professional results. Students taking this course should already have a good foundation in photo-editing software.
