Your Learning Experience

Fixing and maintaining the vehicles that help build our towns and cities is no small task. It takes attention to detail and the ability to think quickly on your feet, just two of the skills you’ll learn in the Truck and Coach Technician (Block Release) apprenticeship program.

Under the direction of experienced journeypersons, you’ll work in fleet maintenance for construction companies, public transit systems or small repair operations, getting important on-the-job training and real-world work connections. You’ll learn to troubleshoot and repair engines, power trains, ignition and electrical systems, brakes, steering, suspension and more. You’ll also learn about job safety and environmental regulations affecting the transportation industry.

This apprenticeship program (310T) follows the block release delivery method in which an apprentice attends school full-time for a number of weeks and then applies their skills into the workplace. It can take up to three and a half years to complete and consists of 6,000 hours of on-the-job training/work experience with 720 hours of in-class training by skilled, licensed journeypersons.

Your in-class training will cover:

  • workplace health and safety
  • applied work practices and procedures
  • engine systems
  • electrical, electronic and fuel systems
  • gear trains

Your on-the-job training will teach you:

  • occupational health and safety procedures
  • electrical systems – starting and charging
  • electrical systems – body electrical and components
  • fuel systems
  • engine systems
