Broadcast Journalism - Television News

The world of journalism is constantly changing, requiring a diverse skill set across television and digital media. Our industry-trained and experienced faculty will teach you how to write effective news stories and shine in front of a camera, as well as how to operate cameras, edit footage, write captivating news copy and conduct compelling interviews. You’ll also gain comprehensive knowledge of television and digital media production, directing and research, graduating as a versatile videographer, capable of adapting to any situation and work environment.
Take your media career to the next level, by studying in Canada’s premiere broadcasting centre, an industry-leading live news studio and green screen facility. You will apply your learning in a hands-on working environment creating current content for and producing a weekly live news program which airs on Rogers TV. You’ll also have the opportunity to expand your portfolio of experience and network with industry connections during a two-month internship in a newsroom. Graduate with a diverse set of storytelling skills that are applicable in a variety of media jobs.
For students interested in studying further, Brock University and Fanshawe College have developed an articulation agreement, which gives you the opportunity to obtain a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies, as well as a graduate certificate in Broadcast Journalism - Television News. Students may start at either institution and receive credit transfer, graduating with both a degree and graduate certificate in only four years.

The effective and ethical use of pictures and sound to tell stories for television newscast. Students will produce television news stories for Rogers Television as well as Fanshawe Television newscast using electronic news gathering and editing equipment. | ||||

The emphasis of this course is to advance the student through intensive practical experience in television news and current affairs production. This course will concentrate on the industry practices required to produce News and Current Affairs programming out of Fanshawe's Television Broadcast Centre, and Rogers Television in London. Incorporating field reports, stories and interviews, the students will concentrate not only on the editorial requirements, but on the production elements required as well as. | ||||
NEWS-6021 | TV News Editing | 2.5 | ||
This course will introduce Television News students to basic post production, emphasizing Non-Linear Editing on industry standard program (Final Cut Pro). Focus will be on news editing styles and techniques. The primary component is to acquaint the student with industry editing concepts, procedures and styles. A secondary component includes exposure to basic graphics creation techniques for TV. Through practical based sessions, students will learn broadcast standards for post-production editing. Media and file management will also be covered. | ||||

This course is designed to have the student actively become involved in a field placement within a television newsroom. Depending on the location and the students' skill set, the student will participate in newsgathering, writing, reporting and television news productions for broadcast. The student must function effectively as part of the team when interacting with staff, crew, talent and other volunteers. They are also encouraged to use the experience to develop and enhance their personal professional development. | ||||

This course will introduce Television News students to visual news gathering techniques. Shooting techniques used in contemporary visual storytelling will be taught. Student will learn the basics of composition, lighting, framing, all technical operations of industry standard equipment, ethical treatment of visuals in news gathering and storytelling. |
