Your Learning Experience

The Visual Effects and Editing for Contemporary Media program is a one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program designed to prepare creative and disciplined students for a career in the Post Production industry. Students will improve their post-production knowledge and skills through individual and group assignments, practical instruction, independent learning, tutorials and research. The program includes an opportunity for client services, an internship within the post industry across Canada, as well as self-directed portfolio projects.

 

During this post-graduate certificate program, you will learn the theory of digital technology and become proficient in using software for video editing, audio editing, motion graphics, 3D animation, compositing and visual effects. You’ll emerge from the program with the technical skills, knowledge and practical tools for a career in advanced post-production.

 

Apply your knowledge, get practical experience and make business connections through an internship within the post-production industry. As well, your portfolio will be expanded and developed throughout the program so you’ll graduate with a professional demo reel to show potential employers your creativity and innovation.

Pathway Opportunities

For students interested in studying further, Brock University and Fanshawe College have developed an articulation agreement, which gives you the opportunity to obtain a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies, as well as a graduate certificate in Visual Effects and Editing for Contemporary Media. Students may start at either institution and receive credit transfer, graduating with both a degree and graduate certificate in only four years.

Videographer
Be part of creating a documentary by recording and editing interviews to help spread messages to inform the local community and beyond about growing concerns or issues relating to every age, culture or job. 

Animation and Motion Graphics Assistant
Create compelling animations for use on LCD screens, digital ribbon boards and videos for social media and broadcast TV. Design animated GIFs and similar marketing assets for online and broadcast use.

Digital Studio Artist
Work with digital, video and print content for some of Canada’s biggest brands. Build and edit digital assets such as emails, web banners and social media posts. Lead the execution of high-quality videos, animations and GIPFs for web banners, email marketing, social and rich media.

 

Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

1. Create complex visual effects utilizing professional compositing techniques such as Chromakey, Motion Tracking, Rotoscoping & Matting.

2. Apply advanced Post Production concepts while working collaboratively in the industry.

3. Analyze and critique professional projects using proper terminology.

4. Operate Post Production industry standard computer software and hardware.

5. Combine and manipulate audio, video, graphics and animation elements.

6. Manage and organize large amounts of media, files and documents on digital devices.

7. Model, render and integrate 3D elements into video projects using professional techniques.

8. Trouble shoot and problem solve video and computer issues during the creation Post Production projects.

9. Edit and mix audio elements for use in video productions.

An Ontario College Diploma, or Ontario College Advanced Diploma, or Ontario College Graduate Certificate from Fanshawe College in:

Applicant Selection Criteria

Applicant Selection Criteria

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:
  1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
  2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)
  3. Achievement in the Admission Requirements
  4. Preference will be given to graduates of the Fanshawe College Broadcasting - Television program with most recent graduates having priority

Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
TVSN-6010Visual Effects 15.5
This course is designed to allow the students to advance their skills in video compositing, visual effects and animation. The students will be creating visual effects and animations that are similar to those seen on television and in films. Individual, group projects, exercises and practical tests will be used to help each student learn new skills and develop problem-solving techniques for the post production industry. Students also share their own creative techniques through presentations that help build a strong learning environment.

This course will enable the Visual Effects and Editing student to experience working independently in the post production industry simulated environment. Students will have an opportunity to experience different post production scenarios, projects and deadlines. A combination of simulated client projects and independent work will allow the students to develop their skills, receive feedback and learn from valuable first-hand experience with post production.
TVSN-6003Digital Applications Theory2
This course looks at the theory of digital technology and the process required to apply it to digital post production, computer graphics creation, digital compositing, and digital compression of audio and video data. It is important that the process be taught in a generic sense, so that students will be able to adapt their knowledge to various types of equipment found in the post production industry.

This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop an advanced understanding of Camera, Workflow & Non-Linear Editing. Students will be encouraged to explore their creativity while completing a variety of assignments relevant to the current post production market. The practical hands on experience students receive will expand their knowledge of Digital Media creation and manipulation, across a variety of genres and editing styles.
TVSN-6012Production for Visual Effects5.5
In this course the student will film unique footage in the studio and in the field to be used in Visual Effects and Editing Assignments for other courses. Camera, lighting, shot blocking and staging techniques will be taught through a series of workshops and studio exercises and projects. The students will be operating professional cameras and lighting equipment during this course. The footage that is captured during this course will be used for individual projects as well as for class assignments and future VEE students in the program for years to come.
