    Program Description

    The Bridging for Internationally Educated Nurses (BIEN) program - Registered Nurse (RN) Stream is designed to enable RN internationally educated nurses (IENs) to meet the safe practice, language fluency requirements, and/or the identified competency gaps required by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).

    The BIEN program is up to 16 months in length, depending on the courses/components required as per the applicant's letter of direction/assessment from the CNO. Upon successful completion of the program, IENs may be eligible to write the registration examination to become registered to practice nursing in Ontario and obtain employment commensurate with their nursing skills and experience.

    The program curriculum is developed based on the CNO's professional standards and competencies for RN practice. The curriculum uses human science perspective with a focus on the metaconcepts of caring and health promotion.

    Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
    NRSG-7081 Language Fluency 1-IEN RN 0
    This 2-week compressed course is designed to assess IEN students' language learning and the use of English in everyday relational practice (as a nurse) including in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The outcome of this course will assist students to create their pathway to success in relational practice in nursing.
    NRSG-7087 Lab Practice 1-Nursing Skills-IEN RN 3
    This lab course provides Registered Nurse (RN) student with opportunities to review and apply the fundamentals of nursing from a Canadian healthcare perspective. Students are expected to articulate the principles and knowledge underlying their nursing techniques/practice in order to develop safe and effective practice when planning and providing care. Collaboration, clinical judgment, critical inquiry, problem solving and relevant health teaching will be emphasized.
    COMM-7019 Relational Practice-IEN RN 3
    The course helps Registered Nurse (RN) students strengthen their relational practice in the context of Canadian nursing and health care. Through nursing theory, this course will focus on understanding the intrapersonal and interpersonal experiences of practicing nurses. RN students will explore how personal beliefs, values, experiences, and perceptions influence their image of the self and others. The course will also enhance the interpersonal communication skills of students by providing them with strategies to understand Canadas unique culture, the process of critical reflection, and how to advocate for nursing care issues among other healthcare providers and members of the public. Through adequate communication and understanding of others, students in this course will be able to recognize and internalize subtle signs of complex change, lead other healthcare professionals to manage diverse client outcomes, and make proactive decisions with the analysis of actively sought information/resources/frameworks/theory.
    NRSG-7083 Nursing in Ontario-IEN RN 3
    This course introduces Registered Nurse (RN) students to professional nursing practice in Ontario and Canada by providing opportunities for students to explore the legal and ethical foundations of the nursing profession (with a focus on RN roles/responsibilities), current issues/trends in health care, and health care delivery reform in Ontario and Canada. The roles and influences of the RN with regard to health care policy, political process, leadership, and creating change in order to foster client and societal health are addressed.
    NRSG-7088 Lab Practice 2-Hlth Assessment-IEN RN 3
    This lab course provides Registered Nurse (RN) students with opportunities to integrate and apply their health assessment and clinical skills in a simulated (low- and high-fidelity) setting in preparation for clinical practice and/or preceptorship. Students are expected to articulate the principles and knowledge underlying their nursing skills/practice in order to develop safe and effective practice styles when planning and carrying out care. Collaboration, critical inquiry, problem solving and relevant health teaching will be emphasized.
    PHRM-7006 Pharmacology-IEN RN 3
    This course provides opportunities for Registered Nurse (RN) students to learn the basic principles of pharmacology to understand how drugs enter and act in tissues. Pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, adverse drug reactions, and drug interactions are discussed using exemplars of key drugs or prototypes within each drug classification, emphasizing therapeutic actions in the human body used to treat a variety of conditions. RN roles/responsibilities and safe medication administration are focused upon enabling students to develop their critical thinking and critical inquiry skills in relation to drug therapy in certain health conditions.
    NRSG-7089 Clinical Pre-Readiness-IEN RN 3
    This simulated clinical practice course is designed to assess the holistic health assessment and nursing skills of the registered nurse (RN) student. Through simulated clinical practice, students demonstrate their clinical skills, nursing competencies, and integration of previous knowledge, including nursing best practices. Students have opportunities to develop their therapeutic relationship abilities, interprofessional collaborative client-centred practice, decision making and clinical judgment, time management, and organizational skills. Successful completion of this course can assist students to develop a pathway to success in their transition to practicing nursing in Canadian healthcare settings.
    NRSG-7085 Health & Transitions-IEN RN 5
    This course is designed to help Registered Nurse (RN) students explore the profession of nursing in the context of Canadian healthcare. Learning will focus around the concept of health and the determinants of health at the level of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations. The impact of health transitions, complex chronic illnesses, disabilities and/or death/dying throughout the life span will be discussed. The ways in which nursing practice can support individuals, families and communities during those health transitions will be explored. Students will also will also be introduced to the basic concepts of research in nursing, and how to participate as a professional in the collection of nursing research data and how to critically appraise research-based evidence.
    NRSG-7084 Nursing Informatics-IEN RN 3
    In this course, Registered Nurse (RN) students explore the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for information and health literacies. Students examine the professional application of information technology in professional practice, nursing administration, nursing education and research. In doing so the RN students become aware of, and competent in utilizing the professional legal and ethical considerations associated with the use of informatics, including social media and electronic health records. Through active learning students determine the appropriate knowledge sources for nursing practice.
    NRSG-7086 Healing & Episodic Health-IEN RN 5
    This course provides opportunities for registered Nurse (RN) learners to focus on individuals' and families' experiences with health and haling during illness through exploring various episodic and complex health challenges while utilizing strength-based nursing and evidence-informed practice. This exploration enables the learners to a) develop understandings of people's meanings and experience of illness by supporting their involvements in own care, b) explore barriers and facilitators to determining people's strengths, capacity-building and empowerment, and c) continue developing clinical judgment, critical inquiry, competency, collaboration, problem solving, health teaching and health promotion.
    METH-7026 Research in Nursing-IEN RN 3
    This course is designed to help prepare students to become knowledgeable users of research. Students will be introduced to different types of research studies and methodologies related to nursing with the ultimate goal to advance the client-centred care and nursing practice. Students will also explore basic strategies for identifying knowledge gaps in nursing practice through literature review and appraisal.
    NRSG-7091 Preceptorship-IEN RN 9.75
    Preceptorship is an opportunity for the student to synthesize areas of professional knowledge and practice with the guidance of a clinical mentor/preceptor in a selected area of practice. Registered nurse (RN) students have opportunities to enhance their professional responsibility, and develop their individual style of nursing practice in accordance with professional standards and guidelines. During this final experience, students focus on strengthening assessment skills, clinical competency, interprofessional collaboration, and decision making skills, increasing independence, and enhancing leadership skills. At the completion of the course, the student will meet the College of Nurses of Ontario entry to practice competencies (CNO, 2014).
    NRSG-7090 Clinical Experience-IEN RN 9.75
    This professional practice course is designed to enable registered nurse (RN) students to synthesize concepts from theory courses and high-fidelity simulation into praxis across community and hospital settings to provide care to individuals and families at various stages of health and illness. While caring for clients, students focus on health promotion and caring using a strengths-based approach, further developing their nursing knowledge, clinical skill performance, interprofessional client-centred practice, organizational, and leadership abilities in an Ontario health care context. Clinical judgement, standards of practice, relational practice, and application of evidence-informed nursing knowledge are emphasized.
