Aviation Technician - Aircraft Maintenance

The program

Aircraft safety is the most important aspect of the aviation industry. Aviation technicians are responsible for ensuring that safety, and will be a valued and vital part of the maintenance team.

With the Transport Canada approved Aviation Technician – Aircraft Maintenance program, students learn about all aspects of aircraft systems used in general aviation, corporate, charter transport category aircraft, and helicopters.

Hiring a cooperative education student provides you an opportunity to “preview” potential employees, and build relationships and loyalty for your future staffing needs.  You'll be supporting the growth and security of your industry.

Content

Along with developing cutting-edge computer and electronic systems skills, students also study propellers, aviation regulations, wing aerodynamics and more. As well, with aircraft constantly evolving and improving, students have opportunities to adapt and upgrade skills as they progress through the program. There is enhanced learning on the part of students due to the integration of the academic and experiential learning.

Outcomes

Graduates will be prepared for a career with Canadian and international aircraft maintenance and aircraft manufacturing organizations.  As well, they'll be able to pursue their license in fixed wing or rotary wing aircraft in either the M1 or M2 categories.

Skill levels:

Year One

  • Shop Safety and Aviation Regulations – 60hrs
  • Metallic Structural Repair and maintenance – 300hrs
  • Aerodynamics(fixed and rotary) – 180 hrs
  • Reciprocating engines and systems – 120hrs
  • Aircraft systems (hydraulics, fuel, emergency equip.) – 180 hrs
  • Electrical theory (AC and DC) – 18

 

Year Two

  • Maintenance Management, Inspection and Records – 120hrs
  • Composite (non-metallic) repair – 180hrs
  • Turbine engines – 300hrs
  • Aircraft systems – 210hrs
  • Airframe electrical and avionics – 210hrs

Why should you hire a co-op student?

Many employers feel today's graduates have no concepts of the “real” world of work; we are providing this experience in Co-op. Any job that gives the student related background in your business would be suitable. Co-op students are ultimately looking ahead to careers in businesses such as yours. For this reason they're not expecting to simply put in time on the job, but are eager to get involved and make a worthwhile contribution. Participation in Co-op also gives the employer the opportunity to try out a student's capabilities without obligation or commitment to permanent employment. This work oriented educational system integrates classroom study and paid, on-the-job work experience, by alternating periods in College with periods of employment by co-operating companies. It is essential that the work experience be a normal one; that the student be treated like a regular company employee so that a realistic picture of the working environment in that field may be obtained. Perhaps most important is what students may gain from the working experience, ie. what is to be discovered, attitude to work, and the ability to get along with co-workers at all levels.

Career opportunities

This program provides 18 months of Approved Basic Training credit towards the 48 months experience required to obtain a Transport Canada Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) license in the M' Category, and prepares the students for careers with Canadian and international aircraft maintenance and aircraft manufacturing organizations.
