About US

The Institute of Indigenous Learning (formerly known as the First Nations Centre) opened its doors in 1996 and has grown steadily since then. During the first year, there were 72 First Nations students registered with the Centre and that number has continued to grow to over 500.

Our Services

Did you know that you have a home-away-from-home here at Fanshawe? It's true! Whether you're Status or Non-Status First Nations, Métis or Inuit, the Institute of Indigenous Learning is waiting to welcome you. Here are a few of the things that Fanshawe's Institute of Indigenous Learning provides:

  • Friendly, knowledgeable staff who can help you with academic or personal issues
  • Peer helpers and peer tutors
  • Cultural and spiritual support and activities, such as a Knowledge Keeper
  • A computer lab where you can do your homework or keep in touch with friends and family
  • A lounge and study area where you can socialize, study, or just relax
  • Lots of intramural sports teams and recreational activities

Indigenous Summer College Program

Summer College is a free five-week program that provides the opportunity to experience Fanshawe, meet staff, faculty and other students just like you. This program is open to all Indigenous students starting a program in September.

Available Groups

Women’s Circle
The Women's Circle is run every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. via Zoom. This circle, which is hosted by Okaadenige provides a positive space to empower Indigenous women on their educational journey to share, learn and grow together. The circle focuses on support, awareness, identity, leadership and self-care.

 

Men’s Circle
Men's Circle runs every other Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Institute of Indigenous Learning with Paul Petahtegoose. The Men's Circle provides a space to share and learn cultural teachings and connect with other Indigenous men at Fanshawe College.

 

Beading Circle
The Beading Circle runs every Thursday from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. via Zoom.

 

Fanshawe Indigenous Student Association (FISA)
The Fanshawe Indigenous Student Association is a group of like-minded Indigenous and non-Indigenous students working towards reconciliation through shared experiences to create positive spaces and platforms that focus on the uplifting of Indigenous peoples and ways of knowing.

Indigenous Action Plan

The Indigenous Action Plan sets forth a number of meaningful actions for its pre-college, certificate, diploma and degree programs. These actions will empower and engage youth around post-secondary studies, promote success in educational and career paths, and connect local Indigenous communities to post-secondary and industry resources.
