A more sustainable Fanshawe

Fanshawe supports the stewardship of the environment both on and off our campuses. Our approach to sustainability is about more than reducing waste and energy consumption (though that’s important, too!). We are committed to advancing practices and policies that address the three pillars of sustainability – environmental, social and economic – to help the College become both an agent of change for the community and a better place, now and in the future.

View our commitment

Sustainable Building Features

At Fanshawe, we believe in embracing social and environmental responsibility while being fiscally accountable, to ensure a sustainable present and future for our community.

Our sustainability practices are guided by the College's values and the principles of compliance, ethical behaviour, stakeholder interest, transparency and accountability.

Change rooms and Showers

People using alternate transportation such as bicycles, walking, and running can use these changerooms to freshen up when they arrive on campus.

Daylight Harvesting

Daylight harvesting is accomplished using daylight sensors that measure light levels. Lighting fixtures are dimmed within a space to maintain a set minimum level to reduce energy consumption.

Energy Efficient Windows

There are a few different window features at Fanshawe, which include windows with argon that reduce the amount of heat being lost through the windows and have low-energy coatings to keep the building warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer; tinted windows that eliminate the need for blinds, reduce glare, and reduce the amount of heat generated in the building; and fritted glass which increases the amount of shade. All of these features reduce the need for heating and cooling which reduces overall carbon emissions.

Energy Recovery Wheels

Energy recovery wheels harvest energy from exhaust air and transfers it into incoming air supply to reduce the amount of energy needed to heat the air to comfortable temperatures. They also work in reverse, reducing the amount of energy needed for cooling.

Water Bottle Fill Stations

All external lighting faces toward the ground, reducing nighttime light pollution.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations are free to use and open to the public. You can book a spot on the mobile App: ChargePoint (available on App Store or Google Play). Users just have to pay for the parking spot.

Energy Efficient Computer Towers

Energy efficient computer towers reduce the amount of electricity used to compared to previously expensive, high-powered computers. power has been reduced by 88%, with each machine using an average of 46kwh, down from 385kwh.

Environmentally Friendly Building Materials

Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are chemicals that are released into the air at room temperature. Using building materials and products with low VOC reduces the amount of chemicals in the environment from things such as adhesives and sealants, paints, flooring systems, composite wood, and agrifibre products.

The majority of washrooms across all campuses are equipped with low flow toilets and sink aerators. In our residences, ultra-low flow toilets can be found. By using taps with aerators, we are able to reduce the amount of water we use without sacrificing pressure. Low flow toilets reduce the amount of water used per flush.

Low-VOC Building Materials

Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are chemicals that are released into the air at room temperature. Using building materials and products with low VOC reduces the amount of chemicals in the environment from things such as adhesives and sealants, paints, flooring systems, composite wood, and agrifibre products.

Occupancy Sensor Controlled HVAC

HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) controlled by high-sensitivity motion sensors makes it so we are not heating or cooling areas with no one in them, reducing energy consumption.

Occupancy Sensor Controlled Lighting

Scheduled lighting times and high-sensitivity motion sensors make it so we do not light hallways or rooms with no one in them. This helps reduce energy consumption.

PPE Recycling System

Large bins are provided in medical labs to collect used PPE. This PPE is sent to a dedicated recycling facility that turns the PPE waste into energy.

Sensors in Waste Compactors

Sensors that detect how full each compactor is, reducing the number of pickups needed, which reduces cost and avoids greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.

Solar Charging Canopies

Variable Speed Drives

Variable speed drives allow motors to be run at differing speeds, reducing energy usage. Variable speed drives can be used in many aspects of building operation including pumps, air handlers and exhaust fans.

Simcoe Campus
Bioswale

Storm water collects in trenches, allowing the water to percolate into the soil. This helps to replenish groundwater sources, decrease pollutants that would otherwise flow into streams, and reduce the burden on municipal storm water systems.

Sustainability interactive map

Click below to view a map of the sustainable features found throughout Fanshawe's London Campus, 1001 Fanshawe College Blvd., particularly the hydration/water refilling stations: https://arcg.is/0zue84.

Fanshawe is also:

  • a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) supporting faculty, administrators, staff and students to be drivers of sustainability innovation.
  • gold certified through the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS), the most recognized measurement and reporting framework for benchmarking sustainability performance in higher education.
  • a member of the Ontario College and University Sustainability Professionals (OCUSP) which connects post-secondary institutions to share ideas and best practices and to monitor the environmental performance of institutions.
  • a proud signatory of the Association of Canadian Colleges’ Pan Canadian Protocol for Sustainability agreeing to provide leadership and maximize our contribution to a sustainable future.

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

To support the ongoing culture of conservation and sustainability at Fanshawe, the College completed a Greenhouse Gas Reduction Roadmap and Action Plan. The goal of this action plan is to reduce the college’s GHG emissions by 30% below 2013 levels by 2030 and 80% by 2050.

Fanshawe’s GHG Reduction Strategy involves four key elements:

  • Conservation and demand management
  • Space optimization and net zero buildings
  • Fleet and facility electrification
  • Renewable energy

Waste Diversion

Waste diversion is a calculation of how much waste is produced that does not go to landfill. In 2019, 58.6% of total waste produced on campus was recycled, composted, or reused. Our goal is to increase our diversion rate every year, with a goal of zero waste to landfill by 2050.

To learn more about waste diversion at Fanshawe, check out our most recent Waste Audit report.

What can you do to improve our diversion rate?

Current programming exists for containers, paper, and organics recycling. Specialty collections include coffee pods, electronics, used writing utensils, batteries, textbooks, and PPE. For a comprehensive list of what you can recycle on campus, visit our Portal Page. You can also email sustainability@fanshawec.ca with any questions.
