It is estimated that more than 1.4 million Canadians work in the construction industry. These essential jobs contribute to building and maintaining the infrastructure for communities all across the country. One of the most critical occupations in the construction industry is the Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO).

A Heavy Equipment Operator is a person that is qualified to maintain and operate heavy equipment. This can include backhoes, bulldozers, cranes, loaders, and more. This program will help you explore the HEO career path and provide valuable insight into what it takes to be successful as an HEO.

 

Subsidized by eCampus Ontario, this program is being offered at no cost to qualifying participants.   

 

What to Expect

The learning modules cover types of heavy equipment and their purpose, duties and responsibilities of an HEO, safety and compliance, education and personal attributes, employment opportunities and more!

Flexible online delivery allows you to complete the program on your own schedule. Participants can expect 9 modules consisting of virtual activities and interactive programming.

 

Additionally, participants should

  • Be able to communicate effectively and have strong interpersonal skills
  • Be friendly, flexible, and willing to work in team-based environments
  • Be able to provide, accept, and integrate constructive feedback
  • Have regular access to a PC or MAC with an internet connection and camera/microphone
  • Have basic computer knowledge and skills

 

Eligibility and Registration

Participants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for this program:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada (the program is not open to international students)
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations
  • For English first language speakers, students must provide proof of proficiency as determined by the college or institute (grade 10 English or college admission testing may be used as an equivalency)
  • For English as a second language speakers, students must provide proof of English language skills (IELTS 6.0; CLB 6; CEFR B2) or equivalency as determined by the college or institute
