The blessed month of Ramadan began on February 17, 2026, and Fanshawe College reaffirms its support for the spirit of reflection, gratitude and unity represented by this holiest and most sacred month in the Islamic Hijri (lunar) calendar.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting, prayer, reflection and community. From dawn to sunset, those observing Ramadan fast from food, drink and other physical needs, focusing instead on spiritual growth, self-discipline and acts of charity. The fast is broken each evening with a meal called Iftar, and the month concludes with Eid al-Fitr, a joyous celebration marking the end of fasting.

This sacred time is an opportunity for devotion, self-reflection, celebration and spiritual rejuvenation. It also serves as a time to extend kindness and support to all, especially those in need.

To honour the significance of Ramadan, the Centre for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (CEDI) encourages Fanshawe faculty, staff and administrators to engage in inclusive practices by:

  1. Being mindful of hosting meal-centric events during daylight hours;
  2. Providing remote or hybrid opportunities;
  3. Offering flex-time options for employees and students observing Ramadan, including flexible working hours, remote learning, and time off if necessary;
  4. Avoiding lunch meetings and adjusting schedules to support those fasting.

By accommodating diverse religious practices, Fanshawe College fosters an environment of respect, inclusion and well-being for the entire community.

Fanshawe College wishes our Muslim friends a meaningful and peaceful Ramadan. May this month bring self-discovery, communal harmony and a renewed sense of unity. We encourage everyone to embrace the values of acceptance and respect for all, regardless of background or beliefs.

Ramadan Kareem!
