Second Nature

Second Nature explores the tension between the instinct to search for meaning in everything and the freedom that comes from simply experiencing what is there. Nature changes without asking why. Light moves, water reflects, plants grow and disappear. Second Nature represents the process of learning to approach life in the same way; to notice without dissecting and to accept change without needing to control it, allowing each moment to exist as it is. What begins as a conscious effort can, over time, become instinctive; a different way of seeing can become second nature. Second Nature reflects a period of learning to be more present in the moments of uncertainty, trusting that clarity often reveals itself only with time.

About the artist:
Laura Klinard is a graduate of Fanshawe’s Fine Art Advanced Diploma program (2020) and OCAD University’s Drawing and Painting program (2022).
Working between abstraction and representation, Laura uses painting to explore how experiences shape who we become. Drawing inspiration from nature and memory, her work reflects an interest in transformation: not as a single event, but as a gradual process that unfolds over time. Through layered surfaces, expressive mark-making, and recurring symbolic forms, her paintings invite others to consider the relationship between who they once were and who they are becoming.
Laura will be the Fine Art Foundation Juror for the annual exhibition during the W27 term.
