Using Your Fanshawe Login and Username
Once your contract has been processed, you'll get an email with your systems username and password. With these, you can access the following:
- Fanshawe email: your address will be username@fanshawec.ca and you should use this account for all college correspondence. This account can be accessed through Microsoft Outlook Online or on any device with the Microsoft Outlook app. All FanshaweOnline (FOL) email is accessed through this account. For details, see FOL Email Help.
- FanshaweOnline (FOL): the College’s learning management system used for delivery of course content, evaluations, and communications with students.
- The myFanshawe portal is an informational site to connect you with College news, resources, and services, including FanshaweOnline, FanshaweLearns, and Workday/Fanshawe One. It is the default homepage for all college web browsers.
- FanshaweLearns is the College’s employee learning system where you can browse, search, and register for internal training and development opportunities.
- Classroom teaching podiums and office workstation computers.
Your Fanshawe ID Card
Follow myPhoto site instructions to upload your photo for your employee card (login needed). In Step 2, select ‘F) College Staff’ and complete the process. Collect processed cards from room E2020 at 1001 Fanshawe College Blvd campus. Email cards@fanshawec.ca for card delivery to another campus.
If you have any questions about your employee ID card or how to obtain it, contact cards@fanshawec.ca.
After you have your Fanshawe ID card, contact your hiring manager or your School to have your card programmed to access the offices and rooms you will need to enter on campus, as many areas of the college require a card swipe for access.
Orientation and Training
All new faculty may receive school-specific orientation introducing them to the office space, team contacts, workstations, policies, and resources uniquely available to them. There is also mandatory training for new faculty depending on their non/full-time category. As part of your training, you'll meet with members of the Organizational Development and Learning (OD&L) and Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) teams; if you have questions about learning outcomes, assessments, or classroom management, this is the best opportunity to have those answered.
New Non-Full-Time (NFT) Faculty
New NFTs will undergo the Orientation to College Teaching (OCT) at semester start. This program covers teaching strategies, FanshaweOnline, and available support services. After signing your contract, you'll receive an email to register using your personal address. OCT involves synchronous and asynchronous sessions, allowing in-person or online attendance, aligning with your course delivery method. Upon completing both sessions (10 hours total), a $250 stipend is provided.
New Full-Time (FT) Faculty
New FT faculty begin their orientation with a one-day, in-person orientation followed by a three-day College Educator Development Program (CEDP) event. The Fanshawe orientation covers professorial duties, workload formulas, benefits, and available support services. CEDP spans two years with three residential phases at Fanshawe, focusing on curriculum, evaluation, tech-integrated teaching, and skill development in a supportive setting. Emails to your personal and @fanshawec.ca addresses will detail orientation and CEDP Phase 1 in mid-August and provide CEDP registration in mid-July.
Required Training and Professional Development Opportunities
All faculty are assigned mandatory training on FanshaweLearns. Certain modules are to be completed once by new hires once, and others recur periodically. After logging in, look under “Due Soon” for a complete list of modules assigned to you. This system also provides access to optional in-house training (FOL, eLearning tools) and a vast library of LinkedIn Learning training topics. These LinkedIn Learning courses cover topics and software titles that may be relevant to your course, and can be shared with students via FOL to supplement your course content. For support in navigating this system, contact ODL@Fanshawec.ca.
Arriving on Campus
Fanshawe’s campuses are located throughout Southwestern Ontario. Visit Fanshawe's Our Campuses page to learn about each location. Note that while most of the campus locations have free parking, the London Campus and Y and Z buildings require a parking pass or metered parking.
Preparing to Teach
Your Fanshawe login credentials will allow you to access everything you’ll need to start preparing your course delivery and to engage with the supports that will make your first class(es) as smooth and productive as possible. Faculty who are able to work through the following five items are ready to begin!
1. Access Your Class Schedule or Timetable
Your class schedule or timetable is available online through WebAdvisor. Open WebAdvisor > Faculty > Faculty Class Schedule (List or Grid view) for course codes/titles, dates, weekly hours, days/times, and delivery location. If you have been hired to co-teach a class, e.g., teaching only one of two terms over the summer, or a class with a separate theory and lab component, please discuss the details with your hiring manager or scheduler.
Note that all classes start on time and end 10 minutes before the hour to allow for travel time and setup between classes.
2. Determine Delivery Format
At Fanshawe, all credit courses have an FOL Course. The delivery mode for the course will determine how FOL is used, including what content is posted and how students will be engaged online. Courses adopt one of three modes:
- Face-to-face (web-enhanced): In-person classes with added online materials.
- Blended: Combines in-person and online coursework, discussions, projects.
- Online: Primarily web-based with limited face-to-face sessions.
Online or blended courses can be synchronous (real-time via Zoom or etc.) or asynchronous (intermittent interaction with pre-recorded content or digital tools). Your class schedule should state the course's delivery method, but if this is unclear, you should discuss with your academic manager.
3. Review the Course Outline and Course Plan
These two documents summarize the outcomes, i.e., the things that are taught and evaluated as part of each course. The course outline is a contract between students and the institution which professors must adhere to, whereas the course plan describes the weekly topics, resources, and evaluations. Both of these documents posted for you and all students in FOL. To locate them,
- Log into FOL with your Fanshawe username and password.
- Click on the course you are teaching under My Courses on the FOL home page.
- For a course outline (CO), click Resources and then Course Outline.
- For a course plan (CP), click on the ‘Content’ menu option and select ‘Course Plan’ from the list on the left.
4. Gather Course Resources
The course plan and outline will detail resources required for the course:
- Textbooks often offer various resources for instructors, including teaching materials (like presentations or lab guides), multimedia elements (e.g., videos, diagrams), and evaluation tools (such as question banks). Use these as a foundation while creating your teaching materials and evaluations. Check with your academic manager or program coordinator to see if there's already a copy available for instructors.
- Most commonly used software (including the Microsoft and Adobe catalogues) are provided free to faculty and students through Fanshawe CONNECTED. For technical support with these products and accounts, contact the IT Service Desk .
5. Set Up Your FOL Course
As part of your orientation, you will complete FOL Essentials training which will introduce the FOL features required for teaching. Many faculty members will go beyond these standards, but the elements described on pages 6 & 7 of the A115 policy document are the minimum expectation for all courses. Additional FOL workshops and training sessions are offered regularly on topics including communication tools, evaluation tools, and grading. Your school may have resources or contacts to guide you through this process, but you can also refer to the tutorials and workshops hosted through FanshaweLearns. For your quick reference:
