June is recognized as Bike Month in Ontario—an annual month-long celebration that promotes cycling as a healthy, sustainable and enjoyable mode of transportation.

Throughout the province, communities come together each year in June to host cycling activities and events to encourage people to ride for commuting, recreation and fitness. Bike Month is a time to highlight the many benefits of cycling and inspire more Ontarians to embrace two wheels as part of their daily lives.
At Fanshawe, we are 'gearing up' with local partners to bring you plenty of reasons to ride all summer, and throughout the rest of the year too!

About Ontario Bike Month

Why Bike Month matters:

Education and awareness: Bike Month raises awareness about the growing popularity of cycling in Ontario and highlights its many societal benefits, including improved health, reduced traffic congestion and better air quality. Organizations and communities use this time to encourage people to try cycling, learn about its benefits and connect with other cyclists who can help them understand and appreciate more about riding.

Provincial strategy: Bike Month supports the goals of the Ontario Cycling Strategy – including the reduction of greenhouse gasses and the improvement of accessibility – by encouraging community participation and sharing educational resources that promote safe and accessible cycling for all ages and skill levels.

Community: June sees a surge in public cycling events across the province. By bringing cyclists together and inspiring new riders to try cycling, Bike Month helps build a stronger, more connected cycling community. Many municipalities host rides, workshops, festivals, showcases, tune-ups and other events to encourage social engagement, including participation in bike-to-work or bike-to-school challenges and attending local events.

Ontario Bike Month official proclamation:

June was officially proclaimed as Ontario Bike Month in 2015. The Ontario Bike Month Act, 2015 formally designates June as Bike Month throughout the province, recognizing the importance of cycling in the province.

Ontario Bike Month Act, 2015, S.O. 2015, c. 16 (Bill 13): https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/s15016

Why should you bike?

Because it’s good for your health, your wallet and the planet! Cycling is a fun and energizing way to stay active, connect with others and enjoy the outdoors. It’s also a smart alternative to driving—saving you money on gas, parking and vehicle maintenance while helping to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. By choosing to bike, you’re cutting your carbon footprint, supporting a cleaner environment and contributing to vibrant local economies through cycling tourism.

Bike Month is the perfect time to discover the many benefits of biking and make it a part of your everyday routine.
