On June 6, 2021, our community was horrified and deeply saddened when a London family was targeted in a terrorist attack rooted in Islamophobia, racism, bigotry and prejudice. Four years later, the loss of members of “Our London Family” is immense and still felt today. Fanshawe College joins the London community in honouring the family and standing against Islamophobia. All flags at the London Campus will fly at half-mast on Friday, June 6.

The City of London has developed a webpage with resources and a list of events to remember Our London Family.

Eid Al Adha

This year, June 6 is also Eid Al Adha, the second of two main holidays celebrated in Islam and marks the culmination of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca and the commemorating of the sacrifice of Abraham. It is celebrated with a special prayer in the morning, the sharing of foods, sweets and meat. Meat is sacrificed and split into three shares: the first dedicated for the poor, the second dedicated to one’s neighbour/community and the last for one’s home/family. New clothes and perfumes are also adorned. Eid Mubarak, which is the greeting, to all those who are celebrating.

The morning prayer will take place at the local mosques across London. One large prayer will take place at Western Fair with a festival to follow.

Our London Family vigil:

Starting at 8:30 p.m., all are welcome to gather at 1434 Hyde Park Road to commemorate Our London Family. There will be no road closures.
This year’s vigil will be short with only one emcee and a quick prayer.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own prayer mats. Those who will not be partaking in the prayer are welcome to bring their own chairs. You are also welcome to stand.

There will be no seating or stage at this year’s vigil.

Parking is at St. John’s Catholic French Immersion School (1212 Coronation Drive).

For many of us, the memory of this tragic event so close to home is vivid and the anniversary will affect us all differently.
