Eighteen students representing Fanshawe’s Faculty of Science, Trades, Technology and Design and the Hair Stylist program put their skills to the test at the 2026 Skills Ontario Competition, held May 4 and 5 at the Toronto Congress Centre.

Three students took home gold medals: Ethan Arrand (Carpentry), Kayla Dean (3D Digital Game Art) and Lisa Dinardo (Landscape Design). Ethan and Kayla are eligible to participate in the Skills Canada National Competition to be held May 28 and 29 in Toronto. Landscape Design is not included at the national competition.

Skills Ontario is Canada's largest skilled trade and technology competition. All participants, including those from Fanshawe, have faculty advisors who invest many hours guiding and preparing them for these skill-testing events.

"Congratulations to our students and my sincere thanks to the faculty who support their success, including Sergii Andreichenko, Mike Ashby, Jeff Champ, Scott Culliton, Gary Gerard, Greg Van Bakel, Jesse Hamilton, Claudio Mastroianni, Dakota Pedersen, Deb Renaud, Rob Taggart, Trevor Van Dyk, Dave Vollmer and Corinne Wilmink," says Stephen Patterson, dean of the Faculty of Science, Trades, Technology and Design.  "Your hard work, passion and coaching opens doors by providing exceptional learning opportunities, industry exposure and confidence to help jump-start rewarding careers."

Carpentry competition:

Competitors in the individual carpentry competition were challenged to interpret construction plans and build a small residential-style structure with all aspects of typical framing, along with a complex stick-framed roof.

“Ethan did an outstanding job and made us all very proud,” says Scott Culliton who will continue to coach Ethan in preparation for the Skills Canada competition. “At such a young age, he demonstrated the composure, skill, craftsmanship, efficiency and professionalism of a highly skilled and experienced carpenter.”

3D Digital Game Art competition:

Competitors were challenged to design a character or robot using a range of concept art elements, then bring their creation into a game engine to build a cinematic scene using environmental assets, lighting and composition techniques. Sergii Andreichenko says Kayla, a standout student in the Game Design program, earned gold by demonstrating exceptional artistic and technical ability, strong time management skills and a consistent, high-level performance throughout the competition.

Landscape design competition:

Competitors were tasked with designing a low-maintenance backyard that included spaces for dining, entertaining, barbecuing, a hot tub and edible, multi-seasonal gardens. Corinne Wilmink says Lisa’s exceptional creative and technical skills were on full display during the fast-paced, problem-solving exercise. It was the first time the Landscape Design program competed at Skills Ontario since its previous gold win in 2017.
