Fanshawe College is strengthening its role in Canada’s aerospace and defence economy with the renaming of the Norton Wolf School of Aviation and Aerospace Technology to the Norton Wolf School of Aerospace, Information and Defence Technologies.
The new name follows an academic realignment that brings aviation programs together with Fanshawe’s School of Information Technology. This integration reflects the accelerating convergence of aerospace, digital systems and national security – and the growing demand for graduates who can work across disciplines.
Stephen Patterson, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Trades, Technology and Design, says the change marks a strategic shift that aligns with federal priorities and responds to rapid technological transformation across the sector.
“Today’s aerospace industry extends far beyond aircraft,” says Patterson. “Innovation increasingly happens where aerospace, information technology and defence intersect. Our new School of Aerospace, Information and Defence Technologies reflects that reality and positions our students to thrive in a rapidly evolving economy. By bringing these disciplines together, we’re preparing graduates with the technical expertise and adaptability employers are looking for today—and the capabilities they’ll need for the industries of tomorrow.”
Fanshawe first renamed its School of Aviation in 2016 in honour of the late Norton Wolf, an avid pilot and prominent philanthropist whose family foundation has made lasting contributions to London’s arts, medical and educational communities. At the time, the School focused primarily on aircraft maintenance and repair. In 2021, the College updated the name to reflect the expanded programming in aviation and aerospace manufacturing, fleet services, administration and commercial flight.
The latest renaming builds on that legacy while positioning Fanshawe to meet the needs of an industry increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analytics, autonomous and remotely piloted systems and low-Earth orbit technologies.
