Fire Alarm Response - Safety Tips

If smoke enters your room:

  • Call Campus Emergency line at 519-452-4242, tell them where you are (campus, floor level, room number or specific location) and tell them that smoke is entering the room
  • Keep low to the floor where the air is cleaner
  • Listen for instructions over the public address system
  • Remain at the same location unless conditions change, that location becomes unsafe, or you are advised by Emergency Responders that it is safe to return to normal activities.

Mobility impaired:

  • If you are on ground level, evacuate to the nearest Evacuation Assembly Area or a safe place outside of the building
  • If on a level that is joined to another building, evacuate horizontally into the adjoining building and go beyond the fire separation doors
  • If there is no access to another building, attend the nearest stairwell
    • Go to the landing and stay where you are
    • Report your location by calling the Campus Emergency line at 519-452-4242, tell them your location (campus, floor level, room number or describe location).
  • If unable to evacuate to a stairwell, the safest place to be is within an office, bedroom or classroom
    • Keep the door closed so that it latches shut - this provides a fire/smoke barrier separation
    • Stay where you are and report your location by calling the Campus Emergency line at 519-452-4242, tell them where you are (campus, floor level, room number or describe location)
    • Do not use elevator.
  • Remain at the same location unless conditions change, that location becomes unsafe, or you are advised by Emergency Responders that it is safe to return to normal activities.

If you cannot leave the building:

  • Go to the most smoke-free room (e.g. bedroom, classroom, office)
    • Close the door
    • Open the window for fresh air
  • Do not try to leave your location as there is a risk of heavier smoke in the hallways and corridors
  • Keep smoke from entering your room:
    • Attempt to seal the cracks around the door and place wet towels or other material at the bottom
    • Seal vents and air ducts the same way (wet towels or other materials).
  • Call Campus Emergency line at 519-452-4242, tell them where you are (campus, floor level, room number or describe location)
  • Remain at the same location unless conditions change, that location becomes unsafe, or you are advised by Emergency Responders that it is safe to return to normal activities.
