Policy Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to have a mechanism should the College want to recognize the achievements of recently retired academic staff who have made a significant contribution to Fanshawe College over the course of their career. This policy provides the framework for the President’s consideration to award an Emeritus designation

2. POLICY

2.1. The Emeritus designation shall be awarded by the President. The Professor Emeritus designation will be based on a recommendation to the President from the Senior Vice-President Academic. Senior academic Emeritus designations (senior staff members whose work directly impacts students, such as Senior VP Academic, VP Student Services, Deans, and student affairs directors) are appointed by the President.

2.2. The Emeritus designation may be awarded by the President based on the following criteria:

2.2.1.

exemplary record of performance;

2.2.2.

a minimum of 5 years of service to Fanshawe College or 10 years of service to the Canadian college system;

2.2.3.

unusually high quality, creative contributions towards the development of the college, or a highly distinguished teaching career as perceived by past students; and

2.2.4.

a demonstrated and ongoing commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

2.3.

A commendation is presented at an appropriate occasion.

2.4.

The Emeritus designation shall be for an indefinite term but may be withdrawn without cause by the President after one year.

2.5.

Those who are awarded the Emeritus designation may be reimbursed for costs associated with pre-approved activity involving the promotion of the College as well as other rights and privileges.

This policy was due for its five year review. Changes were made to add clarification and include an EDI (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) statement.

January 17, 2020

New (October 3, 2019).

This is a new College policy. The Board approved a revised Emeritus policy in October, which now solely addresses President Emeritus. This new College policy addresses all other Emeritus designations.
