Policy Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that students have access to safe, appropriate, and inclusive housing. It aims to provide resources for both on-campus and off-campus housing, supporting students from diverse backgrounds in achieving housing stability, which is essential for their academic success.

2. DEFINITIONS

Appropriate Housing: Housing that encompasses the needs of the tenant by meeting their needs such as household number, housing type, transportation availability, accessibility, location, service and cultural needs.

Community Housing: Housing provided by community organizations, municipalities or non-profits, some of which classified as Rent Geared to Income, offering rent at 30% of the household income to singles or families.

The College will provide students with information and services to support their efforts to obtain appropriate housing.

1. PURPOSE

The purpose of this document is to list appropriate services the College will provide to support students in their efforts to obtain appropriate housing.

2. INTERNAL RESOURCES

2.1. Accessible Information and Housing Options

Housing support and information are available through various platforms to meet the needs of the student. Students can access resources and contact housing staff for support and inquiries at Off-Campus Housing | Fanshawe College. Meetings can be conducted virtually or in-person. First-year students are guaranteed on-campus housing if they meet the application deadlines outlined at Residence | Fanshawe College.

2.2. Housing Supports

The Off-Campus Housing Manager assists with document reviews, inform students of their rights and responsibilities, facilitate internal and external referrals, and mediate landlord/roommate issues. Informational sessions are provided to incoming students through Student Services to prepare and inform them of rental rights for a successful tenancy on arrival.

2.3. Community Engagement and Partnership Development

Fanshawe partners with Places4Students, a managed website for students to conduct safe housing searches. The Off-Campus Housing Manager collaborates with local landlords and property management companies to create a visible presence for student support. Building connections with landlord and property management will allow connections with students requiring short-term or long-term solutions easier to navigate. The Off-Campus Housing Manager will also connect with local municipalities where students may be connected through community housing or income to ensure there is a supportive wrap-around approach to achieve academic achievement.
