Fanshawe students and faculty did exceptionally well at the annual Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) competition in February.
Three students and one faculty submitted images to the event, which took place in Woodstock, ON. Each student could submit two images, which were ranked in four possible scores - 'Not Accepted,' 'Accepted,' 'Merit' and 'Excellence.'

PPOC members were permitted to submit four images. Faculty member Trevor Pottelberg, received three 'Merit' scores and one 'Excellence' for his submissions:
In Sync, Excellence
Pier Pressure, Merit
The Family Tree, Merit
Withstanding Time, Merit

Images that receive 'Accepted' status were to be displayed in the Image Salon at the Imaging Conference, which was to be held in Saskatoon from April 23 to 27, 2020 (cancelled because of COVID-19). 'Merit' ranking is higher than 'Accepted' and 'Excellence' is the top score.
It takes some PPOC members a few years to get an 'Accepted' image, so this says a lot about the quality of the student work. The student images are mixed in with all the other PPOC members. Judges do not know whether they are judging a student image or not. So everyone is judged on an equal playing field, students do not get any accommodations or special consideration.
Trevor is in the running for PPOC Photographer of the Year. Fanshawe will find out in late April 2020 if he wins. At the same time, we will find out if any of our students have won the Student Best of Class Award or Best Overall Student Award. Last year, two Fanshawe students won PPOC awards – two Best of Class Awards and the Best Overall Student Award.
