Yesterday, the federal government introduced legislation to restrict social media use among Canadians under 16, with questions emerging about how a ban could be enforced, how effective it may be, and what it could mean for families and social media platforms.

Garrett Gaudet is a professor and program coordinator of the Business - Entrepreneurship and Management program at Fanshawe’s Woodstock/Oxford Regional Campus. Gaudet is available to provide insight into how similar policies have been implemented elsewhere, what challenges Canada may face and how families can prepare.

Topics for interviews include:

  • How a youth social media ban could be implemented, including age verification and platform accountability;
  • How this legislation reflects a broader global trend toward stricter online safety measures for youth;
  • Why enforcement may be challenging, particularly for a generation that has grown up online;
  • What success could look like in terms of reducing harms and improving youth well-being;
  • Practical tips for families to manage social media use and support healthy online habits.

“The success of a social media ban will depend on how well it is implemented and supported,” Gaudet says. “Reducing access is one piece of this complex puzzle. Education, community involvement and engagement from the provincial and federal government will also be important.”
