Fanshawe College is actively seeking community partners to help keep 106.9 The X, Canada’s first Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) licensed student-run radio station, operational.
Facing a significant deficit over the next two years due to changes and pressures within the post-secondary system, Fanshawe has had to make some difficult decisions about programs, staffing and resources over the past year.
In April 2025, Fanshawe announced the suspension of future intakes for 40 programs starting this September. The Broadcasting – Radio and Media Production program was among the programs suspended. All students enrolled in the program at that time have been given the opportunity to complete and graduate from the program.
Susan Cluett, Senior Vice President Academic, says without future students in the program beyond April 2026, Fanshawe is unable to financially support the radio station.
“We don’t want to lose the radio station, but we can’t continue to operate it at significant financial loss every year and without the majority of the students who participate in the operations of the station,” says Cluett. “We value deeply the contributions made by thousands of faculty, staff and students who have learned their craft at the station over almost 50 years and are proud of the fact many of our graduates have gone on to successful careers in broadcasting in Ontario and around the world.”
Cluett acknowledges the important role the station plays in the College and wider community and says the College is continuing to explore all options at this time.
Interested parties are encouraged to contact Mary Harrison, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Language, Regional Campuses, & Continuing Education at mjharrison@fanshawec.ca by November 14.
