Project Summary
Project B.08.1, part of the Education for Employment in the Pacific Alliance program, aimed to improve the quality of life for men and women by developing a skilled workforce to meet the needs of the extractive sector in Peru. The project focused on implementing a national online Learning Management System (LMS) for technical institutes under the Directorate for Higher Technological, Technical, Productive, and Artistic Education y Artística (DIGESUTPA) of Peru's Ministry of Education (MINEDU).
The Challenge
The project faced some interconnected challenges in implementing an effective online learning platform for Peru's technical institutes. These included addressing significant gender disparities in educational programs, overcoming technological barriers that disproportionately affected women and rural students, and adapting to Peru's unstable political climate. The project needed to create a solution that would be accessible and beneficial for all teachers and students, regardless of their technological expertise or gender, while also being flexible enough to withstand potential political disruptions.
The Solution
To address these challenges, the project developed two comprehensive training programs: a 50-hour course on Online Teaching from a Competency-Based Learning Perspective and a 30-hour Change Management Training program. These curricula were designed to be easily applied across various academic programs, regardless of the instructor's technological proficiency. The solution incorporated asynchronous content to provide flexibility for working students, particularly benefiting women who often manage multiple responsibilities. Additionally, the programs were developed to be mobile friendly with downloadable content for offline use, addressing internet access issues in rural areas. Throughout the development process, the project maintained a strong focus on addressing gender disparities in technical education, ensuring that the needs of female students and instructors were consistently considered and addressed.
They are helping us to create an entire training process, not only in terms of the technical use of the tool, but also of the understanding of a new way of doing education using other media.
