Motorcycle Training and Testing

Steps for obtaining your M2 and M class license

Below are the steps required to obtain your Motorcycle license through Fanshawe College.

  1. Obtain your M1 (beginners) license from any DriveTest Ontario centre.
  2. Register for the M2 Training & Test (1:1 or group format) to upgrade to an M2 class license or the Motor Trike/ Spyder Training & Test to upgrade to an M2M class license.

  3. After 60 days of having your M1 license and successfully completing the training and test course mentioned in step 2, upgrade your M1 license to an M2/M2M class IN PERSON at any DriveTest Ontario location. The DriveTest Centre will have access to your test results 3 business days after your course is complete.

  4. After 18 months of having your M2/M2M and successfully completing the M2 Exit Training & Test or the Motor Trike Exit Training & Test course, upgrade your M2/M2M license to an M/MM class IN PERSON at any DriveTest Ontario location. The DriveTest Centre will have access to your test results 3 business days after your course is complete.

 

*Notes

  • Your M1 license is only valid for 90 days.
  • Course test results are only valid for six months. It is the student’s responsibility to process their license upgrade within the allotted time frame.
  • Students are permitted to use a college-issued motorcycle for their training and road tests when upgrading from an M1 to an M2 or M2M license as long as they have a valid M1.
  • If you do not wish to take the M2 Exit Training & Testing course, you are also eligible to register for a road test through DriveTest to obtain your M license after 22 months with your M2.

Introduction to Motorcycle

Want a glimpse into the exciting world of motorcycles and increase your confidence before entering the M2 course? Then get a head start in this preparatory course where you will be introduced to braking, balance and clutch control. Students do not require an M1 license for this course. Students must provide a DOT-approved helmet with eye protection, leather gloves (full finger), a long-sleeved substantial jacket, long pants (denim or leather), and leather boots over the ankle (no running shoes). Please dress for the weather. If a student is less than 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must attend the first half-hour of the first night to co-sign the required waiver.

Motorcycle (M2) Training & Test

This course prepares you to ride a motorcycle safely and enjoy the experience. This is a Canada Safety Council program sanctioned by the Ministry of Transportation. This intensive practical course is designed to progressively develop your riding skills. At the end of the course, you will be tested and if successful will receive the documentation for your M2 license. Students must obtain an M1 license prior to course start; provide a DOT-approved helmet with eye protection, leather gloves (full finger), long-sleeved jacket, long pants, and leather boots over the ankle (no running shoes). Please dress for the weather. If a student is less than 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must attend the first half-hour of the first night to co-sign the required waiver.

*There is no 60 day waiting period at Fanshawe College to take the M2 Training and Test course. The 60 day waiting period only applies to those testing at the DriveTest centre.*

M2 Exit Training & Test

The course is designed to prepare a rider for the M2 Exit test. Scheduled for one evening, one day. Students must have a valid M2 license and have held the M2 for a period of more than 18 months (with successful completion of Motorcycle Driver Education); 22 months without Driver Education. Students must have their own motorcycle, riding apparel, and valid insurance. Students must ride and pass the simulated road test evaluation.

Motor Trike/ Spyder Training & Test

This course is designed to teach novice or experienced riders how to ride a 3-wheeled motorcycle. This 10-hour course takes the rider through basic skills training. Examples of the training include turning, braking, shifting, and controlling the vehicle at speed. The training includes classroom and practical parking lot training and testing on a Can-Am Spyder. The skills evaluation is conducted at the end of the course by MTO-approved Signing Authorities.

Motor Trike Exit Training & Test

The course is designed to prepare a rider for the M2M Exit test. Scheduled for one evening and one day. Students must have a valid M2M license and have held the M2M for a period of more than 18 months (with successful completion of Motorcycle Driver Education); 22 months without Driver Education. Students must have their own motor tricycle, riding apparel, and valid insurance on Wednesday evening. Students must ride and pass an evaluation on Wednesday night.
