The Museum of Ontario Archaeology is a unique Canadian museum devoted to the study, display and interpretation of the human occupation of Southwestern Ontario over the past 13,000 years. The Museum is located beside the Lawson Site, which was occupied in the 16th century A.D

Project Summary

Students in Fanshawe’s Interactive Media Development - 3D Visualization program had a unique opportunity to bring history to life. They developed an app that uses augmented reality (AR) to allow visitors to view artifacts displayed by the Museum of Ontario Archaeology.

The Challenge

The Museum of Ontario Archaeology features educational programs and exhibitions—including a reconstructed longhouse — focused on 13,000 years of human life in our region. Some of the artifacts are delicate or difficult to access, limiting the ease with which visitors can see them up close.

The museum staff were looking for ways to modernize and leverage existing assets. We took a tour of their space and got the idea to develop an augmented reality (AR) version of the longhouse.

The Solution

The students developed an app that scans QR codes, which will be placed on signage at the museum. With the tap of a button, users can see information about the artifact and a 3D image in AR.

We focused on designing a user experience that has ease of access and portability. We used a minimalistic design that focuses the viewer on the artifacts and the educational elements.

Fanshawe students disassembled the tank, refurbished the parts and repainted. Students used VR to replicate the feeling of being inside the tank.

Colorectal Cancer Canada
CCC challenged Fanshawe’s marketing students to increase awareness of the importance of these tests. During Colorectal Cancer Awareness month in March, the students increased their Google ad presence and launched a TikTok campaign, a platform they had not previously exploited.

Trimco
Trimco approached Fanshawe to develop a marketing strategy to break into the industrial sector by increasing company awareness and generating quality leads. Fanshawe helped Trimco enhance their sales processes, which has led to an 81% sales conversion rate within 7 months.
