Policy Purpose

This policy defines the minimum academic standards required by all students to graduate from approved College programs including minimum grade point average (GPA), length of time to complete program requirements and recognition of academic excellence.

DEFINITIONS

College Credential: A certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or applied degree issued by Fanshawe College.

POLICY

3.1. Scope

This policy applies to all college programs and campuses or external educational bodies (e.g., partner institutions) that award a Fanshawe College credential.

3.2. General Requirements

3.2.1.

Graduation from approved College programs requires a student to complete the program curriculum, to meet its academic standards and to achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (C grade), except in Degree programs, where a student must achieve a minimum average GPA of 2.5 (C+) in vocational courses and a GPA of 2.0 (C) in all other courses.

3.2.2.

Course credits applied toward a student's graduation from one academic program are limited in their use as credit toward that student's graduation from another program. At a minimum, the College does not accept use of such credits to meet the residency requirement of another program.

3.3. Progress Toward Graduation

3.3.1.

A student must meet the academic standards and current competencies of the program in order to graduate. From initial registration, a student is limited to a maximum of seven years (full-time or part-time) to complete program curriculum. A student extending beyond that time frame and/or not meeting the standards or competencies will be assessed to determine if upgrading measures are necessary or available.

3.3.2.

In circumstances where a post-secondary program has been suspended or cancelled, a student has four years to complete its curriculum from the date of the program suspension or cancellation.

3.4. College Residency Requirement

3.4.1.

To be eligible for any College Credential a student must be enrolled and complete at least 25% of that program's credit units at Fanshawe College, unless stipulated differently by other approving bodies such as the Postsecondary Education Quality Assessment Board (PEQAB).

3.5. Recognition of Academic Excellence

3.5.1.

Dean's Honour Roll: In recognition of academic excellence, a full-time or part-time postsecondary student who achieves a term grade point average of 3.9 in their program is named to the Dean's Honour Roll.

3.5.2.

President's Honour Roll: In recognition of academic excellence, a full-time or part-time post-secondary student who achieves a cumulative program grade point average of 4.0 is named to the President's Honour Roll.

3.5.3.

The Dean's Honour Roll and President's Honour Roll designations are determined following the grade point average calculation process established in College policies A112: Course Grade System and A105: Academic Standing. Field placement and clinical performance, while not calculated as part of the GPA, may influence the awarding of these designations.

3.6. Exceptions to Graduation Criteria

3.6.1.

In certain cases, with the approval of the Senior Vice-President, Academic, the minimum GPA may be higher than 2.0 and is based on such factors as the need to demonstrate enhanced mastery in specific subject matters.

3.6.2.

In certain cases, such as rapidly changing currency of subject matter, a student may be limited to less than seven years to complete a program curriculum with the approval of the Senior Vice-President, Academic, in consultation with the Registrar.

3.7. Graduation Ceremonies

3.7.1.

Students receiving a College Credential are entitled to attend a subsequent graduation ceremony at Fanshawe College.
