Policy Purpose
This policy establishes the Library Learning Commons (LLC) as a support for students and faculty in learning, teaching, and research. These goals are achieved by connecting LLC patrons to information and facilitating opportunities for practical skills development in a manner that advances, supports, and sustains equity, diversity, and inclusion.
2. DEFINITIONS
Open Access: The enablement of researchers to make their publications freely available to the domestic and international research community and to the public at large, thereby enhancing the use, application and impact of research results.
Open Scholarship: The application of open practices throughout the teaching, learning, research and scholarly environment.
Patrons: Users and supporters of the Library Learning Commons who typically include Fanshawe College faculty and employees, students, and alumni, as well as, the general public.
3. POLICY
Fanshawe College will provide a space dedicated to the provision of resources related to teaching, learning, and research. Patrons of the Library Learning Commons will be supported in the access and use of these resources.
3.1. Scope
This policy applies to all the spaces, materials, and Patrons of the LLC.
3.2. Principles
3.2.1. The LLC will acquire and make available learning resources that support curriculum and academic programs at the College.
3.2.2. The LLC will maximize on- and off-campus access to digital collections. It will provide patrons with research and reference services, including information literacy, and educational assistance.
3.2.3. The LLC will support open access which prioritizes access, development, and promotion of open scholarship.
3.2.4. The LLC recognizes and honours the intellectual freedom of any person to read materials representing any point of view and covering any type of subject. The LLC recognizes the personal privacy rights of users to consult and borrow materials without prejudice.
3.2.5. Current circulation records of LLC patrons are not released to any person, institution, association, or agency for any reason other than to collect outstanding materials, unless required by law or for reasons of safety and security. Historical records on individual patrons are not retained.
3.3. Administration

1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this standard is to establish and operationalize the activities of the Library Learning Commons.
2. COLLECTIONS
The LLC collects, develops, and manages resources and materials to support the curriculum and research needs of Fanshawe College. Collection materials are acquired and removed at the discretion of the LLC in collaboration with the College.
3. ACCESS
The LLC is open to all of its patrons and the majority of physical library materials are available for all patrons to access. However, some collections and services may only be available to current faculty/employees or current students.
Standards regarding the circulation of materials are determined by the LLC and appear on the website at: Using the Library - (fanshawelibrary.com). Loan periods, borrowing privileges, and other LLC requirements are designed to provide patrons fair and equitable access to materials.
4. SERVICES
The LLC offers services to patrons beyond traditional access to physical and digital collections. These services are designed to facilitate research skills, foster information literacy, and provide general educational assistance. This policy was updated to reflect current practices and changes to governing legislation. The policy has been shortened to focus on principles of access and scholarly activities while directing patrons to the library website for routine procedures like service availability and operating hours.
