The Carpentry and Renovation Technician two-year college diploma program combines in-class learning with two co-operative education work terms. Students will learn the skills to handle tools, read blueprints, material methods, and construction practices. Graduates will also gain advanced skills in leadership and management through the study and application of quantity surveying, estimating, small business operation, scheduling, and property development.

Fanshawe's Carpentry and Renovation Technician program will provide you with the knowledge and hands-on experience you need to achieve your goals.

In your first year of study, you will develop a foundation of knowledge and hands-on skills with respect to tools, blueprint reading, layout, materials, methods and construction practices for residential construction projects. In the second year of our carpentry school, you will take your technical knowledge and skills to the next level with the study of advanced tool use, exterior and interior finishing, as well as an introduction to plumbing, electrical and HVAC. You will also build your leadership and management skills through the study and application of quantity surveying, estimating, small business operation, scheduling, and property development.

The program prepares students for a career in the residential construction industry. Courses are designed to provide the technical knowledge required to perform the construction, estimating, and scheduling associated with the building of one and two-story houses, duplexes and townhouses.  A portion of the program is devoted to the acquisition of hands-on skills pertaining to the construction field.

 

Co-op Opportunities & Career Information

Co-op Opportunities

Graduates of this program will find opportunities within the residential and light commercial industries with general contractors, builders, developers, and building material suppliers. Graduates may fill various roles including carpenter's assistant, crew leader, site supervisor or technical representative. Graduates may also consider pursuing a General Carpentry Apprenticeship or starting their own construction company.

This two year program has two Co-operative Education work terms. Students can choose to participate in a four-month paid co-op term from May to August between years one and two of academic study. The second four-month work term will take place from May to August following the completion of the second year of academic study.

Students who fulfill both the academic and co-op requirements of the program will be eligible to graduate with a Co-op Endorsed Diploma.

Carpentry Apprentice

Assist a journeyman carpenter with remodelling and construction projects. 

General Labourer

Be responsible for performing various tasks to assist operations at construction sites.

Carpenter's Assistant 

Be responsible for gathering and carrying materials, positioning equipment, measuring and cutting materials, cleaning equipment and assisting co-workers with daily given tasks.

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

1. develop and use strategies for ongoing professional development to remain current with industry changes, enhance work performance and explore career opportunities.
2. comply with health and safety practices and procedures in accordance with current legislation and regulations.
3. assist in the preparation of material estimations and quotes and complete all work in compliance with the rights and conditions of contractual obligations, the Ontario and/or National Building Codes, applicable laws, bylaws, standards and ethical practices in the construction, renovation and conservation building fields.
4. incorporate sustainability practices in the implementation of building construction, renovation and conservation projects in accordance with sustainable building guidelines.
5. communicate and collaborate with diverse clients, supervisors, coworkers and tradespersons to complete projects on time and to maintain effective working relationships.
6. interpret project plans and produce technical sketches and documents to support building construction and renovation projects.
7. select and use technologies to obtain, organize and communicate building construction and renovation information.
8. solve problems related to the implementation of building construction and renovation projects by applying the principles of basic technical mathematics, building design and building science.
9. select, maintain and safely use hand tools, and portable and stationary power tools, when performing layout, cutting, fitting and assembly operations.
10. complete building and renovation stages, from site layout and footings to the application of interior and exterior finishes, in accordance with blueprint specifications and conservation principles.
11. select a range of materials and equipment for their appropriate application to building construction and renovation projects.
12. schedule and assist in monitoring the progression of building construction and renovation projects by applying basic principles andstrategies of project management.
13. apply basic business principles and strategies to the operation of a building construction and/or renovation enterprise.

Admission Requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, or a mature applicant with the following course

- Grade 12 Math (C or U) - MCT4C preferred

Students who do not meet the admission requirements are recommended for academic upgrading. A conditional offer may be possible with proof of enrolment. Alternatively, applicants may choose to do the one-year Pre-Technology preparatory program that provides all the admission requirements for this program.

Applicant Selection Criteria

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:
  1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
  2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)
  3. Achievement in the Admission Requirements

Note:

  • Admission to the Fanshawe College Pre-Technology program does not guarantee admission in a subsequent year to the Carpentry and Renovation Technician program. Successful completion of the Fanshawe College Pre-Technology program, however, does enable the student to be given additional consideration when applying to the Carpentry and Renovation Technician program. The Pre-Technology program is the preferred designated preparatory program for admission to the Carpentry and Renovation Technician program.

The purpose of this course is to introduce the students to the basics of reading building construction blueprints for residential projects. In addition, students will be introduced to basic construction quantity takeoff to help reinforce the reading and interpretation of blueprints.
MATS-1024Materials & Methods 14
This course, based on residential construction, will offer the students insight to both Methods and Materials involved in excavation, formwork and floor framing.
COMP-1327Computer Applications3
This course will provide a study of word processing and spreadsheet functions as utilized by the construction industry. This study will be applied to the efficient creation of reports and to the utilization of spreadsheets to produce construction project related data.
CONS-1076Forming & Framing3
In this course, students will apply residential building knowledge in a hands on, project driven learning environment. Building layout, concrete formwork and floor framing will be the main focus of study throughout the term.
CONS-1077Tools-Intro2.5
In this course students will be introduced to the safe use, care and maintenance of a variety of hand, portable, and stationary power tools typically used in residential construction. The practical nature of this project-driven course will facilitate accurate, efficient and effective use of construction tools.
COOP-1020Co-operative Education Employment Prep1
This workshop will provide an overview of the Co-operative Education consultants and students' roles and responsibilities as well as the Co-operative Education Policy. It will provide students with employment preparatory skills specifically related to co-operative education work assignments and will prepare students for their work term.
