If you’re considering a career in the trades, but not sure which trade is right for you, the Try-A-Trade program is what you’re looking for!
The Try-A-Trade Pre-Apprenticeship Program is designed to help you explore careers in the skilled trades before committing to a full apprenticeship. Through hands-on training in welding, carpentry, electrical and more, you’ll discover your strengths, build real skills, and gain the confidence to take your next step.
This program is also an ideal stepping stone for displaced manufacturing or automotive service workers looking to transfer their existing skills into a new trades career.

- Complete industry-recognized safety certifications
- Connect directly with local employers
Program Details
This FREE program includes a blend of in-person and online training and is being offered in two sessions:
- Summer/Fall: June – December (days)
- Fall/Winter: September – March (afternoon/evening)
Each session runs for 14 weeks and is followed by a 10-week, paid work placement with a local employer. Work placement hours and wages are at the discretion of the employer. In-person training will take place at Fanshawe’s Woodstock Campus.
Participants will gain job readiness and employability skills while completing Level 1 aligned trade-specific training. A Certificate of Completion from Fanshawe Corporate Training Solutions upon successful completion of the program.
Trades You’ll Explore
Learners will also be exposed to Sheet Metal, Machining and CNC throughout the training program.
Eligibility and Registration
To be considered for pre-apprenticeship programs, applicants must:
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and legally entitled to work in Ontario.
- Have an Ontario secondary school diploma (OSSD) or grade 12 equivalent.
- Be able to provide proof of identification, SIN and education.
- Be able to commit to a full-time, 14-week training program plus a 10-week work placement.
- Have access to a computer and internet.
