What is housing mediation?

Sometimes conflicts may occur between students and landlords, students and London residents or students and other students in the areas of housing and lifestyles. If you are experiencing conflict with your landlord, roommate(s) or neighbour(s), Fanshawe offers a housing mediation service to help you communicate the issues to them and work through them together.

The service offers the concerned parties a forum to represent and discuss their issues before a neutral third party. A mediator can meet with everyone involved to investigate complaints, facilitate and guide discussion, provide information, clarify legal questions and possibly suggest approaches to handle any problems.

The use of the service is voluntary and in no way waives the participants' legal rights or remedies.

Housing mediation can be used effectively in situations involving:

  • unsatisfactory conditions in apartments or houses
  • property appearance
  • parking complaints
  • noise complaints
  • landlord/tenant issues
  • roommate concerns
  • other lifestyle issues

Housing mediation cannot be used for the following purposes:

  • to obtain legal advice
  • as an advocate for one party against another
  • as an alternative to the police in emergency situations
