Your Path to Becoming a Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP)

The National Payroll Institute’s PCP designation is the foundation for a successful career in payroll.  The PCP courses will help you gain an in-depth understanding of the legislative requirements to keep your organization compliant throughout the annual payroll cycle. When you achieve the designation, you join a growing community of supportive professionals and gain access to the resources you need to stay current and compliant. 
The PCP designation requires three core payroll courses, an Introduction to Accounting course transfer credit and one year of weighted payroll work experience:
 

  1. Payroll Compliance Legislation 
  2. Payroll Fundamentals 1 – Prerequisite: Payroll Compliance Legislation
  3. Payroll Fundamentals 2 – Prerequisites: Payroll Compliance Legislation and Payroll Fundamentals 1
  4. Introduction to Accounting - must be completed at a post-secondary institution
  5. PCP Work Experience Requirement Application (a minimum of one year weighted Canadian payroll work experience)

 

Students must first register with the Fanshawe College and pay the school’s registration fee. Students must also register with National Payroll Institute and pay the Institute's course fee and the membership fee to receive access to the online materials and the learning platform. Students should register with the Institute no later than five business days before the start date of the course.

Your Path to Becoming a Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP)

The National Payroll Institute’s PLP designation is the next step for PCP designation holders looking to enter a management position. The PLP designation builds on compliance knowledge and develops payroll management skills to prepare seasoned professionals to manage a payroll department.

Enrolment Prerequisites: Students must submit the Payroll Experience Prerequisite Application and receive approval from the Institute prior to enrolling in the Introduction to Payroll Management course. Students must also be PCP designation holders. 

The PLP designation requires two core payroll courses and three transfer credit courses:

 

  1. Introduction to Payroll Management - Prerequisites: Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation and two years of weighted payroll experience)
  2. Applied Payroll Management - Prerequisite: Introduction to Payroll Management
  3. Organizational Behaviour Management  - must be completed at a post-secondary institution
  4. Managerial Accounting - must be completed at a post-secondary institution
  5. Compensation & Benefits Management - must be completed at a post-secondary institution

Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP)

Payroll Compliance Legislation (ACCT-1088)

Students who complete this course will know the payroll compliance responsibilities that affect organizations, be able to comprehend payroll legislation, and be able to effectively communicate these to all stakeholders. This course will provide students with the payroll-related legislation affecting organizations, as well as the tools to find information and apply that information to different scenarios in relation to individual pay.

Students must first register with the College/University and pay the college registration fee. They must also register with the National Payroll Institute at least 10 days prior to the start date of the course and pay the NPI’s applicable fee(s) in order to receive their course materials and get access to the online learning platform.

 

Payroll Fundamentals 1 (ACCT-1087)

Pre-requisite: ACCT-1088

Students who complete this course will be able to apply payroll legislation and calculate individual pay. This includes all components of individual pay from remuneration, through deductions, to net pay for both regular and non-regular situations. Students will have the content and skills to effectively communicate all aspects of the individual pay calculation process to external and internal stakeholders.

Payroll Fundamentals II (ACCT-3042)

Pre-requisites: ACCT-1087 and ACCT-1088

Students who complete this course will be able to calculate and report the government and third party remittances, year-end requirements and accounting for payroll at the compliance level for the organization. Students will be able to effectively communicate these organizational processes and requirements to internal and external stakeholders.

Principles of Accounting 1 (ACCT-1100)

This course introduces the student to the Principles of Accounting, and includes an exploration of the underlying concepts that guide the preparation of accounts for individuals and organizations. It is designed to teach the student, regardless of program destination, an essential life skill - an understanding of Net Worth, and its importance to business success and the financial well being of the individual.

 

Certified Payroll Management (CPM)

 

Compensation & Benefits Administration (MGMT-3048)

Pre-requisites: MGMT-1006 OR MGMT-1017

This course will provide students with an understanding of the process, issues, and techniques involved in administering a compensation system. Students will learn both the theoretical and applied aspects of the compensation function; the linkage between the compensation function and the organizational management process; and the compensation system design necessary to attract, retain and motivate the required workforce. 

 

Cost Accounting 1 (ACCT-3022)

Pre-requisites: ACCT-1004 & ACCT-1011 OR ACCT-1100 & ACCT-1011

This introductory management accounting course teaches students to employ techniques such as job and process costing, general cost allocations, cost/volume/profit analysis, budgeting, and relevant costing. Students will need a laptop computer with Microsoft in particular Excel.

 

Finance & Accounting for Non-Accountants (FINA-1038)

Pre-requisites: ACCT-1004 OR ACCT-1100

FINA-1038 will provide you with an understanding of management and financial accounting, accounting reports and disclosure and the methodologies required to perform calculations as the basis for sound decision making. It is strongly recommended that you have an introductory knowledge in accounting in order to be successful in this course.

 

Introduction to Payroll Management (ACCT-1091)

Pre-requisite: ACCT-3033 OR ACCT-3042

This course is the first core payroll course in the Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) certification program. Introduction to Payroll Management prepares professionals to manage a payroll department by introducing them to the most applicable core management subjects based on market research, the course provides the management content and tools required to be a successful manager, such as decision making and project management. It builds on the foundation of a Payroll Compliance Practitioner's experience, knowledge and application of legislative monitoring and effective communication of payroll programs and policies.

Students must first register with the College/University and pay the college registration fee. They must also register with the National Payroll Institute at least 10 days prior to the start date of the course and pay the NPI’s applicable fee(s) in order to receive their course materials and get access to the online learning platform.

 

Organizational Behaviour (MGMT-3007)

Pre-requisite: MGMT-1006 OR MGMT-1017

Students in this course will acquire and learn to apply the knowledge and skills necessary to work successfully in any organization. Organizational, team and individual relationships and processes and their impact on organizational outcomes will provide the framework for the course. Within this framework, various topics, including theories of organizational behaviour, decision making, communication, motivation, leadership, values, emotion, conflict, negotiation and perception, will be examined. Students will complete a personality assessment and relate their results to course concepts.

 

Organizational Behaviour (MGMT-3041)

Organizational behaviour (OB) theories and concepts are applicable to various work settings—private, public, for-profit, and not-for-profit. This course investigates how individuals, groups, and structures influence and are, in turn, influenced by behaviours in organizations. Discussion will focus on topics that include: history of OB; evolution of organizational structure, design and culture; work place productivity, employee skills and technology demands; conflict resolution; interpersonal skills; legislation related to workplace discrimination and harassment; leadership; and management of change, power, and organizational politics.
