| PARA-6017 | Paramedicine-Intro to Adv | 4 | ||
| In this course, students will receive an orientation to the concept of case-based learning. The philosophy of the Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) Program will be covered along with program expectations, class preparedness and research techniques. This course will establish the framework for all other courses in the Advanced Care Paramedic Program. An overview of various topics will be presented. Emergency Medical Systems, medico-legal issues, statistics, research, communication and health and safety will be discussed and reinforced. | ||||
| ANAT-6010 | Anatomy & Physiology for Advanced Care | 1 | ||
| This advanced course includes the study of the structure and function of the human body. First principles of anatomy and physiology will be reviewed. Interaction between systems and medical applications will be stressed. Emphasis will be placed on integrating applicable knowledge with the Advanced Care Paramedics' scope of practice. Content will focus on that of the nervous, respiratory and cardiovascular systems. | ||||
| PHRM-6006 | Pharmacology for Advanced Care | 1 | ||
| This course will provide the student with the foundations of pharmacology including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and medical math. Students will gain an in depth knowledge of the indication, actions, dosages and adverse affects of various pre-hospital emergency pharmaceuticals. Medications used in caring for cardiovascular patients will be introduced. All medications relating to the care of respiratory illnesses will be covered. | ||||
| PARA-6018 | Patient Assessment | 2 | ||
| In this course students will discuss and practice various approaches to patient assessment. Students will set priorities and implement components of their assessment to reflect the presenting condition and/or chief complaint of various patient cases. Students will learn to employ various assessment strategies and adaptations for the infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient. | ||||
| PARA-6003 | Airway & Respiratory Emergencies | 1 | ||
| Students will engage in case-based and problem-based learning applicable to airway-respiratory emergencies. A variety of advanced airway interventions will be learned and practiced as well as a review fundamental knowledge and primary interventions. Evaluation of a patient's respiratory status and applicable corrective actions will be addressed. | ||||
| PARA-6013 | Mgmt of Cardiovascular Emergencies | 2 | ||
| In this course, students will learn to recognize the various manifestations of cardiovascular compromise. Students will utilize various assessments to differentiate the patient's diagnosis, will set priorities and employ the appropriate management. This course will be delivered using a case-based approach to patient assessment and management. | ||||

| PARA-6014 | Advanced Cardiovascular Emergencies | 3 | ||
| In this advance course, students will expand on their knowledge base from PARA-6013 and learn to recognize and treat patients in evolving cardiac compromise or cardiac arrest. Students will utilize various assessments to differentiate the patient's diagnosis, will set priorities and employ the appropriate management. This course will be delivered using a case-based approach to patient assessment and management. | ||||
| PARA-6015 | Traumatic Emergencies | 3 | ||
| In this course, assessment priorities and management techniques for a variety of presenting conditions will be covered. Students will investigate various conditions leading to an altered level of consciousness in the patient. Students will also present and discuss case studies involving patients with respiratory distress, acute abdominal injury or illness, environmental emergencies, obstetrics, trauma emergencies and multi-casualty situations. | ||||
| PARA-6006 | Paramedicine: Unifying Concepts | 1.5 | ||
| In this course, students will explore a variety of issues encountered in the emergency medical field. Previously learned knowledge, assessments and psychomotor skills will be applied to diverse and complex patient populations. | ||||

| PARA-6007 | Hospital Clinical Practice | 12 | ||
| In this course, students will apply learned assessment and interpretation skills, patient management, and specific treatment techniques in the hospital setting. Students will have exposure to patients in a variety of settings including emergency departments, operating rooms, and obstetrical units. The hospital clinical practice consists of a minimum of 240 hours in an acute care hospital. This course is competency based and may be extended to ensure competency as outlined in the Paramedic Programs Policy manual. | ||||
| PARA-6008 | Field Internship | 10.8 | ||
| In this course, students will consolidate all learning outcomes for the program in the field setting. By the conclusion of this course, students will have demonstrated all program and PAC NOCP competencies on an independent basis. The field internship consists of a minimum of 400 hours with an Advanced Care Paramedic. This course is competency based and may be extended to ensure competency as outlined in the Paramedic Programs Policy and Field manuals. | ||||
| PARA-6019 | Comprehensive Review | 2 | ||
| As the concluding component of the Advanced Care Paramedic Program, students will consolidate key concepts of pre-hospital care. Utilizing a student-centered approach, course participants will relate and integrate theoretical concepts previously learned with clinical and field situations. Challenges of the Advanced Care Paramedic will be thoroughly discussed. Students will receive individualized feedback following a comprehensive Oral Board Examination of their theoretical and practical skills. | ||||

| Students Must Complete a Minimum of 11 credits in this program at Fanshawe College to meet the Program Residency requirement and graduate from this program | ||||
