| This course will assist students gain a greater awareness and understanding of their own personal attributes and fit for the community studies field. There will be a focus on personal development and the understanding of leadership styles. Students will become more aware of their behaviours, attitudes, and values as they learn to improve their leadership and communications skills. | ||||
| SKLS-1024 | College Orientation Skills | 3 | ||
| This course will help the student to become successful in a post-secondary environment. Students will develop skills and strategies associated with academic preparation (including essay writing and presentation skills). The focus on critical thought is an essential component for this course. The exploration of college services will also be addressed. | ||||
| PSYC-1113 | Psychology-Intro | 3 | ||
| Psychology is the study of who we are and why we do what we do. This course is an introduction to understanding ourselves and others. The student will learn to view the human experience from a variety of perspectives. | ||||

| This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop their professional presentation skills through a variety of activities. Students will develop professional digital literacy skills using industry-relevant tools, including Microsoft and Adobe applications, to create documents and multimedia presentations. The course also introduces effective use of online meeting platforms and develops foundational understanding of responsible and practical applications of artificial intelligence in academics and workplace settings. Students will produce professional multimedia presentations and word-processed documents, demonstrating their skills through both oral and written presentations | ||||
| DEVL-1050 | Discovery of Community Studies Careers | 3 | ||
| Students will be introduced to a variety of Community Studies careers. By reflecting on presentations from guest speakers, students will determine their interest, suitability, and available pathways regarding the professions of Early Childhood Education, Honours Bachelor of Early Childhood Leadership, Honours Bachelor of Behavioural Psychology, Developmental Service Worker, Recreation and Leisure, Social Service Work, and Child and Youth Care. Students will gain an understanding and appreciation of the importance of interprofessional practice while supporting people from vulnerable populations | ||||

| Students will have an opportunity to explore key professionalism values and soft skills related to the field of community studies. They will start to define themselves as professionals in the helping field as they are introduced to ethics and standards for employment. | ||||

| This introductory Self-Care & Wellness course is designed for first-year Human Services Foundation students to explore the essential role of holistic wellness in both personal well-being and professional effectiveness. Through interactive learning experiences, students will examine the multidimensional nature of wellness, including physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health, while reflecting on meaning, purpose, and personal values. The course emphasizes the development of practical self-care strategies, including stress management, emotional awareness, habit formation, and behavior change, alongside foundational skills such as effective communication and navigating difficult conversations. Students will also explore key factors that support longevity and healthspan, including physical activity, nutrition, sleep, and financial well-being. By connecting theory to practice, learners will build resilience, accountability, and self-awareness, preparing them to sustain their own well-being while supporting others in the Human Services field. | ||||

| This course offers an introduction to the study of human development across the lifespan. Students will examine developmental stages from early child development through to late adulthood and beyond. They will have an opportunity to develop a better understanding of their own developmental process. | ||||

| This course will help the student raise their awareness as it relates to human diversity. The student will explore topics connected to culture, gender, and privilege. Students will develop an understanding of inclusive communities while developing skills to work effectively within the community studies field. | ||||

| This course helps students develop essential skills related to interpersonal communication, relationship maintenance, co-regulation, and non-verbal communication. Key skills include listening and responding, and developing helping dialogue. As communication is the foundation for developing relationships, this course is essential in developing interpersonal competence. | ||||

| The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with the sociological perspective and how it explains various forms of societal behaviour. In addition, the course is designed to enable the student to objectively critique and analyze various social structures and social processes from a sociological point of view. | ||||

| This course focuses on understanding ethical issues and developing the essential skills needed for educational and professional practice. Students will learn to apply an ethical decision-making model when faced with challenging situations. Through signature learning experiences (SILEx) in the form of community site visits and practical scenarios, they will explore moral decision-making and respect for diverse perspectives. | ||||

| This course will examine the changing family trends within a Canadian context. The student will begin with the conceptualization of family. They will further their understanding of themselves through the exploration of the family life cycle and the ever changing challenges connected to the family. | ||||

| This course, designed for students who plan to work in the field of Community Studies, focuses on professional written and verbal communication skills. Students learn to prepare a variety of work-related documents. In addition, students learn about research methods and documentation formats. The principles of effective writing - organization, grammar, style, clarity, and tone - are reinforced throughout the course. The goal of the course is to prepare students for the communication tasks and considerations they will encounter in the Community Studies workplace in order to meet the needs of employers and/or the communities they will serve. | ||||
