Interactive Media Design-2024/2025

Level 1
Take all of the following Mandatory Courses:
WRIT-1037Reason & Writing 1-Contemporary Media3
This course will introduce contemporary media students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking.
MMED-1050Digital Media Theory & Project Mgmt 13
This is an Interactive Media preparation course, the student will be exposed to all the technologies, and methodology used in the two-year program. Time Management principles and self-learning strategies are a key objective of the course.
MMED-1051Design & Image 13
A course to introduce students to elements and techniques of good digital design, with an emphasis on designing for interactive interfaces. Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe Illustrator CC software will provide the foundation for this course.
MMED-1052Multi-Media Production3
This course will introduce students to the range of tools and applications current in the interactive field, as well as the techniques for developing a Web site with graphics, text and basic hypertext functionality. This course will introduce tools and techniques with an emphasis on effective site and interface design as well as optimized media and code development.
MMED-1053Visual Communication 13
This course will introduce students to the theory and application of visual based design and layout currently used in the interactive media field. This course will introduce tools and techniques with an emphasis on effective forms of communications through a variety of visual based applications.
MMED-1054Multimedia Authoring 13
This course will introduce students to the range of tools and applications current in the interactive field, as well as the techniques used for the collaborative development of web based interactive applications.

Level 2

COMM-3075Communications for Media3
This course, designed for students who plan to work in the field of media, focuses on professional written and verbal communication skills. Students learn to prepare a variety of work-related documents. In addition, students learn about research methods and documentation formats. The principles of effective writing - organization, grammar, style, clarity, and tone - are reinforced throughout the course. The goal of the course is to prepare students for the communication tasks and considerations they will encounter in the media workplace in order to meet the needs of employers and/or the communities they will serve.
MMED-1055Multimedia Authoring 23
This course will continue to explore current tools and techniques introduced in Authoring 1. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of programming with JavaScript and then move to Front-End JavaScript-based interactive media.
MMED-1056Web Development 13
Extending topics introduced in the first year, students will cover the Web design/development process in greater detail. Topics covered include basic and enhanced responsive site structure, local site management, CSS design, CSS layout applications and browser compatibility issues. Some use of Javascript will also be covered.
MMED-3035Design & Image 23
A course that further develops the knowledge of the elements and techniques of good digital design, with an emphasis on designing for interactive interfaces. Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe Illustrator CC software will provide the foundation for this course.
MMED-1057Motion Design 13
This course will introduce students to the core principles of motion design. Emphasis will be on typography, colour theory and animation principles as related to on-screen graphics and animations.
MMED-3036Digital Media Theory & Project Mgmt 23
This is a continuation of Digital Media Theory 1. Time Management principles and self-learning strategies will continue to be a key objective of the course.

Level 3

MMED-3038Electronic Image Production3
The goal of this course is to educate all students of the importance of logos, style guides, brand guides and documentation. General overviews and examples will be shown to reinforce the structure and flow of professional documentation. Students will learn essential skills in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, how to use the local network and learn general operational methods used in the Interactive Media Department.
MMED-3039Multimedia Authoring 33
This course will further develop the student's range of tools and applications current in the interactive field, as well as the techniques used for the development of web based interactive applications. The emphasis will be on effective application, interface design, and programming using optimized assets and code.
MMED-3040Web Development 23
A continuation of both the Authoring and Internet topics introduced in first year, this course will extend students skills with current tools for developing dynamic, database driven applications for the World Wide Web. This involves an introduction to database structures using mySQL, the use of PHP to control and display database information, and more detailed work with dynamic Web content.
MMED-1058Motion Design 23
In this course students will be introduced to the principles of design for motion graphics. Kinetic typography, colour theory and basic timeline animation concepts will be used in the development of title sequences, bumpers, trailers and station IDS. Students will utilize industry standard software in the development of motion graphics including Cinema 4D, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Audition, Adobe Premiere and/or Final Cut Pro.

MMED-5006Multimedia Authoring 44
This course will reinforce and expand on the range of tools and applications covered in MMED-3039, as well as continued techniques used for the development of web based interactive applications. Additional API's and Libraries will be introduced in this term.
MMED-3006Video Production3
Students will develop detailed skills in Video Production for a variety of multimedia applications. Additional topics will include 3D and Special Effects. Independent group projects will be assigned and evaluated. The emphasis will be on content development for video and the use of software for post-production (e.g. Adobe After Effects).
MMED-3014Multimedia & the Internet3
A continuation of both the Authoring and Internet topics introduced in the Fall term, this course will extend students skills with current tools for developing dynamic, database driven applications for the World Wide Web. DEVL-3005Career Research3
Our Career research course was created in response to industry feedback. Focusing on helping each student develop the skills they need to successfully apply for a career in the interactive industry. This career preparation course also teaches the student about profiling companies and developing job search skills, networking and interview prep and gain confidence in their ability to succeed in this industry.

Students will have the opportunity to internship in the Interactive Industry, to develop real-world skills in planning and team-focused design & development environment. Second year students begin research in the first term, in preparation for their placement in the final term.

MMED-3013Multimedia Marketing/Business Management3
This course introduces the students to business models common in the interactive industry, strategies for marketing interactive services, business planning, effective communication, and other topics relevant to the interactive service industry. IDP professionals are increasingly looking to start and operate their own businesses as an alternative to salaried positions with larger corporations. Students will acquire an understanding of topics such as the formation and operation of a freelance business.
INNV-1001Innovation Applications3
Organizations and individuals need to be innovative to succeed in the complex and rapidly-changing global marketplace. In this course you will learn the fundamentals of innovation and how innovation applies to your discipline or field.Using this foundational knowledge, you will apply the novel and adaptive thinking processes and tools presented in the course to complete an innovative learning project in collaboration with other students.The project will be based on a real-world scenario with a defined scope as chosen by your professor. The project may involve external live clients and a multi-disciplinary approach.Throughout the course, novel and adaptive thinking skills as well as collaboration skills will be evaluated through self assessment.This course is designed to give students in certificate and diploma programs a foundation in innovative thinking.
