This entrepreneur program provides insight into the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship. You’ll study a variety of aspects including marketing, finance and market research, along with hands-on experience with Quickbooks. You’ll also explore alternatives for starting a business, like franchising, taking over a family firm and financing. You’ll finish this entrepreneur program with a comprehensive business plan based on your own business idea.

Your Learning Experience

Business Fundamentals - Entrepreneurship is a one-year Ontario College Certificate program. This customized entrepreneur program is designed specifically for the novice business starter and will provide students with the knowledge required to plan, start and manage their own small business. This entrepreneur program also assists students in acquiring the skills for long-term management of the business and their development as entrepreneurs. 

 

It takes courage to put a business dream into practice. It also takes a plan. Under the supervision of a faculty advisor, students will undergo a unique opportunity to prepare a comprehensive business plan intended to help students launch their own business upon graduation. Banks require a business plan when considering financing, and so does a great business idea in order to succeed.

Please note, a laptop is recommended for this program. It is recommended that students use a PC laptop vs. a Mac laptop, as Windows is required to be able to load program-specific software. Career Information

Fanshawe's Business Fundamentals - Entrepreneurship program provides graduates with powerful insight into the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship. Through the knowledge attained studying various aspects of marketing, finance, market research and hands-on experience with Quickbooks, graduates will be able to jump start their own small businesses. This program also sets graduates up to pursue a LEAP Junction program at Fanshawe that supports young entrepreneurs with launching their companies.

Admission Requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, or mature applicant with the following courses

- Any Grade 12 English (C or U)

- Any Grade 11 or 12 Math (C, U or M)

                       - If Grade 11 Math is used, a minimum of 60% is required.


Students who do not meet the admission requirements are recommended for academic upgrading. A conditional offer may be possible with proof of enrolment.

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:
  1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
  2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)

BUSI-1121Small Business Creation3
Students will gain the principal skills to successfully start and manage a small business. Students will also gain a basic understanding of the activities and demands associated with running a small business, such as market research, legal issues, managing risk, managing people, leadership, operations management and growing a small business. Students learn problem solving and decision-making skills related to a small business. The course culminates with the students creating and presenting their business plan.
BUSI-1122Small Business Marketing3
This course is designed to introduce potential entrepreneurs to the field of marketing with extra attention devoted to marketing a small business. Students will learn that marketing in todays fast-paced and competitive environment encompasses a great deal more than simply advertising. A focus will be made on how to best examine and analyze market information, and then use this information to make decisions. Upon completion of the course, students will have created an entire marketing plan and will understand how it applies throughout the entire business planning process.

This course is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of accounting and financial management concepts to prepare them to assume a role as an entrepreneur or general manager of a small business. As such, it focuses on recording transactions, financial statements (Cash Flow, Income Statement, Statement of Owners Equity and Balance Sheet), internal control systems and cash control, budgeting, financial analysis, and payroll.

An introduction to computer applications is undertaken in its relation to general business practices. Topics include an overview of information technology using computers and printers, file management, and utilizing the Internet for research. Specific applications include Microsoft OneNote, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The contents of lessons and projects simulate situations encountered in general business processes.

The course is designed to establish a foundation for business communications through the development of writing, editing, reading, and basic computer skills. The student will plan, write, edit, and format material for production of work-related communications such as emails, memos, letters, reports and presentations. Correct writing is emphasized. Research skills are also taught.
MKTG-1028Secondary Market Research3
This course provides an introduction to marketing research. It focuses on the collection, analysis and reporting of secondary data (data that has already been published) for planning, evaluating and improving marketing programs. Secondary data is used to answer questions about the size and segmentation of markets, competitor strategies, media effectiveness and changing customer needs. Students will be introduced to paper-based, database and Internet sources of marketing data and information and will complete a research project.
