Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), observed on November 20 each year, is a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring and commemorating the lives of transgender individuals who have been victims of violence and discrimination.

TDOR was started in 1999 by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil for Rita Hester, a trans woman who was killed in 1998. This day serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the challenges and hardships faced by transgender people, particularly transgender women of colour, who are disproportionately affected by violence.

The day underscores the need for legal protections and social support for the transgender community. In addition to honoring the memories of those lost, Transgender Day of Remembrance encourages dialogue about the systemic issues that perpetuate discrimination and violence against transgender individuals. It is a day to reflect on the progress made in advancing transgender rights and to recommit to the ongoing work of creating a more inclusive and accepting society for all, regardless of gender identity.

During the Transgender Day of Remembrance, Fanshawe College invites the Fanshawe Community and the wider London Community to come together to remember those whose lives have been lost due to anti-trans violence, transphobia, hate crimes and intolerance.
