Happy Halloween, Fanshawe!
Halloween (or sometimes Hallowe'en) is a fun and festive time of year celebrated on October 31 annually. It’s a day when people dress up in costumes, enjoy spooky decorations, and go trick-or-treating for candy. Whether you choose to join in any of the festivities, it can be a great opportunity to experience once-a-year traditions that form a unique part of Canadian culture.
Here are a few tips to keep your Halloween safe and enjoyable:
- Watch out for trick-or-treaters: If you’re driving during trick-or-treating hours, be extra careful in residential areas. Excited children in costumes might be on or near the roads, so slow down and stay alert.
- Stay safe with your drinks: Protect yourself from ‘spikes’ by keeping an eye on your beverages at all times. Don’t let your drink out of your sight.
- Plan your ride home: If you’re out celebrating, please drink smart and plan a safe ride home. Use public transportation, a rideshare service, or designate a sober driver.
- Be mindful of guests: If you’re hosting a party, know who’s coming and going. Thieves know where the party is at too, so don’t let strangers in during Halloween festivities, especially if you’re renting or leasing.
- Fire safety: While candles are great for ambiance, be sure to put them out when you leave a room so they don’t become a fire hazard. Consider using battery-operated candles as a safer alternative.
- Remember, costumes are not consent: No matter how sexy, scary, cool, elaborate or otherwise attractive a person’s costume is, do not touch before asking for their consent. Also remember that behaviors like cat-calling, following someone or taking photos or video without permission are non-consensual acts that can be considered threatening.
- Be a good neighbour: Every interaction is an opportunity to represent Fanshawe in a positive way. Whether you're attending a party, walking through a neighbourhood or returning home late, be mindful of noise, litter, private property and shared spaces.
